bullet  General Notes:

Probably born at Deal Farm, Manaton, Devon. He was a Yeoman of Aptor, Ipplepen/Marldon, and Vogwell, Manaton, Devon. In 1834, when his uncle, William HEYWARD of Langstone Farm, Manaton, made his will, Thomas was made one of the trustees of the estate and was mentioned as of Ipplepen, Devon. He was also mentioned in his father's will. Thomas occupied Vogwell Farm. The Heatree sawmills were sited there, powered by a large water-wheel fed from the East Webburn leat; this leat fed another wheel at Heatree House. In 1842 when Thomas paid tithes for the farm, two of his fields were called 'Wash', and 'Mill Pitts'. The first indicates a sheep wash, and the last probably a blowing house and tinner's pit. In the 1843 Tithe map, three fields indicating possible tin-mining were Mill Pits, Pitts and Pitty Park, and a field adjacent to some prehistoric hut circles called Yelland - usually a derivation of 'old lands', indicating early cultivation. The brothers Walter and William IRISH were at Vogwell in 1870, probably as tenants, because the KITSONs bought it from Thomas PETHYBRIDGE in 1872, when Thomas was living at Dittisham, near Dartmouth. At the 1851 census he was of Vogwill, Manaton, Devon, and a Freeholder occupying 140 acres of arable and 140 acres of common land at North Bovey, employing two labourers. Also in the house were his wife Jane (54), son Thomas (30), daughter Elizabeth (21), son Moses (18), son Joshua (16), son Mark (10), unmarried House Servant Mary JEFFERY (35), unmarried Farm Servant, Robert CROOT (19), and Farm Servant, Henry WOLLACOTT (12). He was believed to be at Dittisham sometime in the early 1850's. On the property, "Bosomzeal", it is believed there are the remains of an ancient manor owned in the 15th. century by John BOZUM. Now there exists on the property a house, farm, manor, and the remains of a chapel. Nearby is 'Fire Beacon Hill', one of the chain of beacons prepared to warn of the approach of the Spanish Armada in 1588. At the 1881 census Thomas, Jane and daughter Elizabeth, were living at "Dart Villa". They apparently had 14 children. Thomas died at the grand old age of 96 years. A transcript copy of his will reads: "This is the last Will and Testament of me Thomas Pethybridge of Bosomzeal in the parish of Dittisham in the County of Devon, Farmer, made this twenty eighth day of January One thousand eight hundred and seventy three (28/01/1873) Whereof I appoint Robert Lewis Fox of the same place Gentleman Trustees and Executors I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Pethybridge All the furniture and Effects in the Spare Room at Bosomgeale - All the residue of my household goods and furniture Plate Linen Books and China I give and bequeath unto my dear Wife Jane Pethybridge absolutely - All my monies Securities for money Farming Stock and Effects and all other my real personal and testamentary Estate and Effects whatsoever I give devise and bequeath the same unto my said Trustees and the survivor of them and the executors administrators or assigns of such survivor Upon trust to convert such portions of my said trust Estate as shall not consist of money into money and to stand possessed of the proceeds arising there from and of the monies forming the other portion of my Trust Estate Upon trust to set aside and invest in their or his names or name either on Government or Real Securities the sum of One thousand pounds and to pay the Dividends and Interest arising therefrom unto my said wife during her life - And after her decease I dispose of the said sum of One thousand pounds in manner hereinafter mentioned And also to set aside and pay to my said Daughter Elizabeth Pethybridge out of my said Trust Estate the sum of Five Hundred and fifty pounds.
