Reputedly he came to New Zealand in the early 1830's on an American whaling ship, jumped ship like a lot of the whalers did... He was born in the USA.. A great uncle said that his grandfather or father I think it would be grandfather fought for the British against the French in America and settled there. - Sharon Wood
