Cause of his death was Drowning.
George Cooper was first mate on the vessel Fifeshire which was wrecked on the rock now named after it in Nelson Harbour
He drowned as captain on the maiden voyage of the schooner Phoenix. Prior to being lengthened 10ft and renamed the Phoenix, the boat was the cutter, Lively, which George also captained.
George married Mary Ann HURREN, daughter of John HURREN and Elizabeth SEAMAN, on 15 Nov 1842 in Nelson, Nelson, New Zealand. (Mary Ann HURREN was born on 13 Feb 1823 in Kelsale, Suffolk, England, christened on 21 Mar 1824 in Kelsale, Suffolk, England, died on 5 Oct 1916 in Kopuaranga, Wellington, New Zealand and was buried on 9 Oct 1916 in Mauriceville, Wairarapa, New Zealand.)
