Richard was successful fisherman and boat builder in Coomb's Cove. In the 1850s he hired Albert Myalls and William Reeves who were stowaways from Dorset England. They were put ashore in Fox Cove and walked over a mountain to Coombs Cove. Albert Myalls later married Richard's daughter Elizabeth and William married Richard's other daughter Frances Ann..
