bullet  General Notes:

James and Elizabeth married at Bombay, India in 1851. On Christmas day of 1853, James with his wife plus infants Bertha and Charlotte boarded the ship "Australia" along with 136 other discharged soliders and set sail for Melbourne, Australia. This trip from Bombay to Melbourne took almost 2 months but the ship arrived safely in Port on the 22nd February, 1854. James and Elizabeth evidently didn't like Melbourne too much because 18 months after arriving in Australia, they paid passage to New Zealand aboard the ship "Gil Blas". This ship was a 175 ton brig which frequently plied the Tasman around this period. On this occasion, she had 52 passengers, including our James and his family, all under the command of Captain John Nicol. She docked in Port Chalmers, Dunedin on the 28 November 1855. Although a fairly short trip of about 10 days, it appears it was somewhat rough for the passengers. Following their arrival in Dunedin the family first resided at Green Island a suburb of Dunedin. James started out as a Gardener. At the start of 1856, the three children that James and Elizabeth brought to New Zealand were Charlotte, now aged 5, Bertha and Thomas would turn 1 year old in April of that year. James and Elizabeth were to have 6 more children. Born at Green Island were Florence Louise, Violetta Frances on 26th Jan,1857 and James White Isteed on the 27th July 1860. Olga Catherine arrived next followed by Walter John in 1866. Olga and Walter may not have been born at Green Island because sometime between 1860 and 1869, the family moved south, they lived at Lawrence for a time and it was there that their last child Elizabeth Ann Isteed was born on 26th Jun 1869. It seems likely that this was the period where the family became acquainted with Samuel Whiteside who was destined to marry Bertha in 1871. A move to Tapanui followed soon after, and this is where the family was to stay. The Isteed family is named as being one of the early settlers of Tapanui. James did farming work and was also listed on the Militia Roll. At the time of James's death by accidental drowning in 1902, he was listed as having 3 living sons and 6 daughters.
