Isabel Mary Cunliffe was born in Sydney on 15 September 1892, the sixth child of Margaret and John Robert Cunliffe.
She attended Cleveland Street Public School and was always greatly interested in opera and heard Dame Nellie Melba sing.
While holidaying with her sister Gert near Cooroy in Queensland, she met Leopold Ernest Schmidt, a New Caledonian. They were married on 15 August 1915 and sailed for England via New Zealand and Cape Horn, where Leo enlisted in the British forces then engaged in 'The Great War'. Isabel worked locally in England at that time.
They returned to Sydney in 1919 and Leo changed his name from Schmidt to Delroy before Margaret Ellen (Rita), their first child was born in November 1919.
After Rita's birth, Isabel and her baby went to join Leo on a dairy farm, 'Canala' near Murgon in Queensland. Her three sons, Fred, Leo and Lawrence were all born in Murgon.
While living at Murgon, Isabel took a keen interest in the Country Women's Association and was president for a time. She also exchanged opera records with a friend.
In 1935 they moved to a banana farm at Carool in the Tweed Valley and back to Sydney in 1940.
Back in Sydney, Isabel took a diploma in Pottery and Sculpture and taught in Mosman and Avalon where they settled. She continued with her craft all her life.
Leo died on 6 February 1955 and Isabel on 26 July 1985.
