David arrived in NZ. with his wife Sarah, on 117 Feb 1864 aboard the vessel Swiftsure, from Melbourne, Australia. He was sworn in as a Militiaman as a volunteer to serve in the Auckland Militia.
The Queen of the South. Capt R Moss arrived in Melbourne Australia on the 8 Aug 1863 with 439 adults after a voyage of 140 days from Liverpool England. Among the passengers were: David DOWNES 24 Factory operator. Sarah DOWNES wife. Elizabeth DOWNES 32 spinster. John Thomas DOWNES, infant. Thomas DOWNES 25 Lab. Ann DOWNES 27 wife. David Downs enlisted in the 4th Waikato Regiment on the 20 Jan 1864 in Melbourne Reg No 30.

David Downes/Downs From a transcript (not the original record) of the nominal and descriptive roll for the 4th Waikato regiment. Regimental No. 30 Trade or Calling Labourer. Date of Enrolment 20 Jan 1864 Place of Enrolment Melbourne, Australia Where Born, Parish Glossop. Where Born, County Derbyshire Age at Enlistment 24. Size at Enlistment 5 feet 10 inches Ship Swiftsure Married or Single M.
The year after their marriage the couple and their young son emigrated to Australia on the "Queen of the South". The ship, captained by R Moss, sailed from Liverpool and arrived in Melbourne 8 Aug 1863. The family left Hamilton for the gold mining areas of Thames and Waihi. It is understood they later went to Auckland although David was in Western Australia in 1892, probably mining. He died in Perth 12 Mar 1892 and was buried there. Sarah died in the Thames Hospital 10 years later, 26 Aug 1902, and was buried in the Shortland Cemetery.

Height - 5ft 10in. Ship - Swiftsure. Marital status - Married. Colour of eyes - Blue. Colour of hair - Brown. Complexion - Fresh. Religion - Protestant. Relieved from actual service and put in possession of land - 24 Jun 1865. Town section # - 157, West Hamilton. Country lot # - 9, Knights' Survey Puketa. Remarks - Sentenced to 21 days imprisonment 1 Jan 1865 (haven't found the reason for his imprisonment).
