Charlotte aged 30 years came out to NZ aboard "Lloyds." departed London 11th Sept 1841 arrived in Nelson 9th Feb 1842.Berth number 59/60 Charlotte 33, William 11, Elizabeth 9, Henry 8 Martha Joan 3, Joseph 2.Charlotte had William, Elizabeth & Henry before marrying John.Aged 21 when she had William aged 23 with Elizabeth & 27 with Henry, she had these 3 children out of wedlock.They came out under the name of Inwood. Birth records do not show an entry of a father.
She lost both of her children to John on the voyage. Son Joseph Windebank died 20th Nov 1841 aged 2 yrs & Martha Joan Windebank died 25th Nov 1841 aged 3 yrs.They were buried at sea off the coast of South Africa.
Boat arrived on Friday 11th Feb 1842. They sailed into Cook Strait but not arriving in Nelson until Tuesday 15th Feb on a fine sunny day with a noon temperature of 66 deg F. On the shipping records states William, Betsy & Henry Inwood were John's step children.There has been a book written about the voyage,by Charlottes great-great grandson Barry Buckley which follows the account of the ill fated voyage through his own research on the Lloyds. It has the worst record of any immigrant ship in NZ for deaths on the journey.
