John Alexander STEELE

  General Notes:

Served in the First World War with D Company, 1st New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He embarked on 9th Oct 1915 aboard SS Mauganui and disembarked Nov 17th 1915 in Port Suez. He went onto France where he was in the battle at Ypres. Eventually promoted to Sergeant he was gassed and suffered the effects for the rest of his life. His service number was 23/1195. Medals 1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-18 and Victory Medal. His main occupation was in the cheese industry and he managed cheese factories in Taranaki (Skeets Rd being one), and Rai Valley in Marlborough. In his 50's he obtained an Engine Drivers Certificate and was responsible for the boilers at Griffins Confectionary factory in Nelson until his retirement.
