THE BUCKNERS OF SISKIYOU COUNTY - ex Steve COMBS Nancy (BUCKNER) SHETTLER 264 seems to be the first of the BUCKNERs to arrive in Henley, (at that time called Cottonwood), in about 1853. She came to California with her two children, Ellen 2641 & Alice 2642, & her husband Charles SHETTLER. Margaret, (known as "Annie"), and Albert were born here before Nancy divorced Mr. SHETTLER. She married John HILT around 1860, and they lived in Henley. They had two sons; Henry, who died before 1870, and John Arthur, whose head was hit by a rock when he was thrown from a horse at age 13. The horse returned home, but his dog was found lying with his front paws and head resting on the boy, guarding him. Nancy's sister, Emily 269, came west in the early 1860's and married Charles Wesley HILT 30 Jul 1863. William HILT, father of John and Charles, came with Charles to the area in 1860. Emily and Charles were parents of Allen and Wilmer who were both born in Henley. As Emily died in 1873 and Charles in 1878, the boys were raised by Nancy and John. John HILT came across the plains to California by ox team in 1851 and there met William H. SMITH who when 14 years old had traveled twice between St. Joseph, Mo., and Santa Fe, N.M., with Kit CARSON and two of his partners hauling whiskey and other provisions to trade with the Navajo Indians. One of the partners, a Mr. MAXWELL, loved to gamble as did the Indians. They would race horses with little William as the jocky, but the Indian ponies would always win. This angered MAXWELL, and on his return to St. Joseph he purchased a thoroughbred race horse. On the next trip they won blankets, weapons, food, and even some squaws. When CARSON arrived, he made them give all the loot back, as his business depended on the good will of the Indians. At the end of the second trip William hired out to CARSON'S other partner, MCDERMOTT, and came to Los Angeles where he met John HILT, and together they walked to Hangtown, (now Placerville), pushing a wheelbarrow containing pick, pan, and shovel. Upon arrival they heard of an even richer gold strike near Yreka, so they walked to that town and then on to the Henley area where they finally took up mining. HILT and SMITH were responsible for the hydraulic cuts in the hills above Henley, and they hired hundreds of Chinese to work the mines. They started a saw mill, and SMITH sold his share to HILT in 1877. SMITH also had a general store, blacksmith shop, and stage express station. Nancy HILT sent her daughter, Ellen SHETLER, to Michigan to live with reletives and attend a proper school. When it came time for her to return to California, John HILT and William SMITH went to get her. John went to visit reletives in Illinois while William went to Michigan for Ellen. She told him that it would not be proper for them to travel together unless they were married, so they did and lived happily ever after. She established the Western Union telegraph office in their home in Henley. Elisha BUCKNER 266 came to Siskiyou County in 1882 with his sons Nixon 2663 and Miles 2664. He did some mining while his sons worked for John HILT at the sawmill. In 1885, he sent for the rest of the family. They came by train to Ashland, Or. in what were called emigrant cars, then by wagon to Henley. Elisha and family returned to Illinois in the early 1890's with six of his children either remaining in the area or returning to live in Siskiyou County. m1 9.9.1850 Will Co. sp-Charles SHETTLER/SHETLER of Paris, IL. This family arrived from KS in Henley, Siskiyou Co, CA 1887. He sold real estate in Tacoma, WA Territory for a short time before moving to CA c1898. Here is his autobiography written in hia own handwriting in a small notebook. Born- near York - Clark County Illinois, 11 Oct 1840. My father was a farmer. There were in the family eight boys and three girls. Six boys and two girls lived to man and womanhood. I attended school - such as it was (Subscription School) three months in the year, from the age of seven until I was fifteen years old. My mother died when I was 14 years old. The spring before I was 16 I was hired to work a year for a man named George HILLER in Coles County, IL. at SlO.OO a month. He had a large farm. Sl6.OO a month was the most he paid to any of his men, and while I was the youngest yet I did the same work the older men did. When 17 I commenced to learn the painters trade. Worked at it a year. When 18 drove an ox team of 2 yoke for my father into Mapelo County, Iowa and during the winter hauled rail for my uncle. The distance was 12 miles. Had to start very early. Got home late at night. Sometimes I wag almost frozen. Returned co Clark County, Ill. and worked one year on a farm for a Mr. George POTTER, for Sl3.OO a month. At this time there was great excitement in both north and south, and in April l86l Fort Sumpter was fired upon by the rebels. When it was known that Sumpter was taken, the war fever raged in the north. A company was enlisted in our county town, Marshal. When Sumpter fell I went to Marshal, a distance of l2 miles. Found a company being formed and was the 14th man to enlist. l3 had put their names down before I reached the town. The last of April we went in to camp at Matoon, Coles County, with a full company. Joined with 2 other companies which formed the 2lst Illinois Infantry. We remained in camp until the first of June. Went to Springfield the middle of June. Was mustered into the U.S. service for three years under U.S. GRANT as, (who was) Colonel. Went home to help recruit the regiment. Returned the last of the month and on July lst l861 started for Quincy. For four years was marching, drilling, camping and fighting. Went into Missouri, Arkansas (under STEEL). Back to Corinth, Mississippi & up into Kentucky after BRAG, was in the battle of Pesigville but suffered no loss in our regiment, although some parts of our army suffered much. This was Oct. 2. Went to Nashville, camped until Dec. 26. Started under Gen. ROSECRANS to Murfresborough 22 miles south of Nashville where Gen BRAG with 4O,OOO rebels were stationed. We had about the same number of men. We encountered their outposts the evening of the 3Oth. Our regiment and the 15th Wisconsin charged a battery which was supported by a brigade of Rebels. We reached the battery, but were driven back with heavy loss, several men killed in our company, lost 2OO men killed and wounded in our regiment in 2O min. The next day, Dec. 3lst, the battle opened at daybreak. We were driven back 3 miles, but at noon was reinforced with fresh troops and drove the enemy back. On the 2nd of Jan '63 they charged us, and were driven back with heavy loss. They then gave up Murfresborough and went south to Chatanoga. We remained in Murfresborough till August. In March I received a commission at first Lieutenant Col. 79th Illinois Infantry in which regiment I served until the war ended. Was in the battle of Liberty Gap & Chickamagua, Ga. Sept. l9th & 2Oth. At Stone River or Murfresborough we lost, out of the regiment I was in, 3O4 men, one more than half that went into the fight. At Chickamagua in the 2 days battle we lost more than half our regiment, killed, wounded and captured. We gained Chatanooga but was shut in there until the last of Nov. when the battle of Lookout Mt. and Missionary Ridge were fought. I commanded my own company and Co. A. in the battle at Missionary Ridge. After the battle we marched through snow and sleet to Knoxville in East Tenn. Wet and cold at night and wading through slush, we marched 75 miles to find that LONGSTREET had attacked Burnside and been whipped. We remained in East Tenn. during the winter. Returned to Chatanooga and started on the Atlanta campaign in May 1864. Was in the battle Rocky Face Ridge - May l4 - when my brother Colonel Allen BUCKNER who led the charge was severely wounded. Was in severel skirmishes and 3 hard battles in the 1OO days march to Atlanta-Resacka, the charge over Kenasaw Mountain and Peach Tree Creek were all hard battles. At Resacka and Kenasaw we were repulsed, but repulsed HOOD at Peach Tree after the fall of Atlanta. Marched back toward Nashville to prevent HOOD's army going north. Was captured at the battle of Franklin last of Nov. '64. Taken south, finally landing at Andersonville prison on Christmas day Dec. '64 where we suffered untold misery. Was released and reached our lines Mar. 25 l865. In hospital 3O days. Went to St. Louis. Was sick there in Everet hotel 3O days, then went to join my regiment at Nashville was mustered in as Capt. of my company. Was mustered out of the service at Springfield, Ill. Reached home July 1st, l865. - Thanks to Peter MCGAVIN for converting the pdf to txt. m1 sp-Mary E MCDOWELL of Platt Co, IL d 1870 Lovington, IL m2 2.4.1871 sp-Annette Clarissa "Nettie" HUSE b 10.7.1951 Hancock Co, IL d 9.5.1937 Hayward, Alameda Co, CA bur 12.5.1937 Yountville, Napa Co.
