Obituary in the Gentleman's Magazine: 31.5.1816 At Camden Row, Camberwell
in her 66th year, Mrs Mary DEANE, relict of Mr George DEANE, late of
Fish-street-hill, London. In her the Christian character was fairly
exemplified. Besides fulfilling its duties with blameless propriety,
she possessed politeness and sensibility, which rendered her at once a kind
and interesting companion. These qualities were heightened by her
information and judgement, and a delicate vivacity which ever afforded
a fund of amusement. Her mind had been agitated for the last two years
by heavy affliction, and at length fell into a state of depression,
from which she is now happily released.

Michael J. WOOD "The Descendants of Robert William ELLISTON"
Family No. 212, WikiTree Hart-2529, Biography: She loved sport.
At Boarding School she was Captain of the Hockey Team. The Silver Cups that
lined the shelves in her home were testimony to the Team's success. The best
way that her teacher had of ensuring that she knuckled down to her academic
studies was to threaten to keep her in and miss her beloved sport. She was
an excellent tennis player and it was on a tennis court in India that she
first met her future husband, while he was at that time a Lieutenant in
the Dorset Regiment. They were given a full Sword of Honour at their
marriage in England. During WW2 she knitted clothing for the soldiers.
After the war, together with the family she joined her husband in Austria
where he was commanding Troops. There were constant invitations to social
events. During their time in Milstatt, the British Government commandeered
a large Villa in which the family were to live together with a full staff
of servants to run the large house which spanned a small road so that
an archway ran underneath the house allowing cycle traffic to pass.
General WEST of the Austrian Army was house-guest during that time.
The house had many beautiful chandeliers and a great Ball-room. The ladies
and gentlemen would arrive on social occasions in all their finery
[with the children looking over the banisters as the guests arrived].
Upon returning to Sussex in England it soon became apparent that another
move was inevitable. Marielle's husband was awarded the OBE and appointed
to the War Office in London so the family moved to Claygate in Esher, Surrey.
Later Lionel took over the position of Public Relations with the rank of
Brigadier and he was awarded the CBE at Buckingham Palace just prior to
the family leaving England, bound for New Zealand.
After arriving in New Zealand in 1957 and settling with the family in
Milford on the North Shore in Auckland the first thing Marielle did was
to single-handedly set about redecorating the entire house, painting and
wall-papering every room. Marielle had many talents. She played
the accordion and she also composed some music. She had attended Art
College and she painted small watercolours. In New Zealand she attended
China Painting Classes and painted a number of delightful scenes.
She carved miniature orchestral instruments out of plaster of Paris using
single strands of her own hair for the strings of the violin.
She learnt to spin doing all the processes from the raw fleece to
the finished product. She sorted the wool, washed the fleece, carded it,
spun it and plied it. She loved working with wool and she continued to knit
and crochet well into her nineties, even when with arthritis she could
barely move her fingers and she also had very poor eyesight. She wrote many
little humorous poems and she wrote a number of short stories drawn from
her life experiences. She was a keen gardener and always when moving house
it was the garden she attended to first. Whenever she was looking at
a new property she ensured she had with her a compass to check the angle
of the sun.
Together with one of her sons she bred show birds and then learning that
people didn't know what to do with their birds when they went on holiday
she ran a Budgie Boarding House from home. Inevitably there were some birds
that needed extra attention. Marielle would set about ridding them of
the dreaded life-threatening red mite. She had a special 'hospital' cage
that could be kept at an even temperature to care for sick birds and
invariably with delight the owners noticed the remarkable change of
their birds to good health on their return.
She set about purchasing spare sections of land in Albany and when she had
acquired three or four adjacent sections she first cultivated a small part
of the land and grew vegetables, allowing the neighbour's sheep to roam on
the remainder. She soon began to draw up a plan for a new house to be built
there. Since Marielle had always lived in very large houses throughout her
life the plan she drew just got larger and larger! The house was duly built
in 1965 by family friend Len Sigglekow.
When Lionel and Marielle moved to Glenfield which was to be Lionel's
last home before he died Marielle, joined the Salvation Army and became
a regular Hospital Visitor. She wrote a small book to encourage others
to visit hospitals, the proceeds of which went to the Salvation Army.
Marielle moved again after Lionel died but to a house in the same district.
She died at the age of 94 and was Cremated at Albany Crematorium in
Schnapper Rock Road.

d 9.3.2014 Santa Fe, Pannay, Philippines. Bio thanks to GW:
Dick lived in Austria after WW2 while his father was there commanding troops,
first in Millstatt and later in Vienna. He attended Army School in Spittal
and Vienna.
In his early life Dick took part in many activities. He helped build
the family aviary in NZ & bred many species of birds inluding prize-winning
budgerigars. He was a Patrol Leader in the Milford Scout Group and attended
The World Jamboree. He played Cricket for Rangitoto College 2nd Eleven
and was a member of the North Shore Rowing Club. He joined both a Tramping
Club and a Mountaineering Group and climbed with R. TORNQUIST (a former
Science Teacher at Rangitoto College who had climbed with Sir Edmund HILARY).
Dick played the drums for the Takapuna Brass Band. Dick was educated at
Oakwood in Chichester, England, Rangitoto College in Auckland and Auckland
University where, majoring in Political Science, he attained an M.A. with
2nd Class Honours. He was elected President of the Students Association
[1966] and started a Student Newspaper Outspoke to rival the only
previously available Student Newspaper, Craccum.
"The SIS on campus". In May 1966 Outspoke, published accusations of
attempts to recruit students as informants by an employee of the Security
Intelligence Service, David GODFREY, who had enrolled as a student in
Political studies. Some of his fellow students feared that their different
opinions exposed to him would jeopardise their future careers.
The University saw no grounds to move his tuition to a completely
extramural basis, which was poorly received by some students.
In an unprecedented move police were called to break up a 50-strong protest
outside the Political Studies Department. AUSA sent delegations to Cabinet
and other MPs warning of more demonstrations unless active security agents
were withdrawn from the campus. The VC denounced the protesters as being
disruptive and trying to victimise an individual. The Deans Committee
agreed but also resolved that the University would not tolerate a student
spying on other students. Politicians weighed into the matter,
making various accusations of communist activity amongst staff and
students. A commission of enquiry was set up to clarify the matter, and
found that Godfrey had been very widely active on campus, making about
30 enquiries including investigating two lecturers with European connections.
The inquiry concluded that private tuition for Godfrey was the best
decision under the circumstances. It was also written into University
statutes that any SIS officer enrolled as a student cannot make any
security-related inquiries at University."

While at Auckland University he travelled to China representing the
Students Association and became unwittingly involved in a situation which
resulted the following day in the headline article in The Auckland Star.
Just prior to leaving his hotel Dick had carelessly thrown into the hotel
rubbish basket one of the many photos he had been given of Chairman Mao.
This had been duly noted and reported, [having been regarded as a great
insult]. The Red Guards stormed into his room and demanded an apology.
As penitence, he was told to bow down a number of times and criticize
himself. To this, Dick refused. To his credit, Dick was able to successfully
defuse the situation. Exercising his considerable charm he explained that
he had not done so out of disrespect but merely because he had been given
a large number of photos of Chairman Mao and since he was about to leave
China he had discarded one photo [that he had not torn up] whereupon
the Red Guards duly apologised to him and accordingly accompanied him
down to the railway station wishing him a safe journey home.
In Australia he decided to cross a rather large desert in a very old car.
Given the fact that Dick had absolutely no mechanical skills it was indeed a
considerable risk! When the inevitable happened and the car broke down he was
convinced his last hour had come. He said that for the first time in his life
he prayed. Shortly thereafter, along came a hiker carrying life-saving water
and possessing the mechanical skills to fix the old banger! Thus, eventually,
together they successfully drove out of the searing desert.
Dick travelled to Russia and then to Bangkok where he taught at Tammasat
University but the world of Commerce beckoned and he and a friend worked in
a Publishing and Market Research Company in Bangkok "Business Information
Services Ltd.". He subsequently wrote a very large book on Marketing &
Research. He formed his own Import/Export company, RGW Co. Ltd., travelling
frequently to Taiwan where he had previously lived for three years working
for GPC Ltd., a company which was eventually incorporated into RGW Co. Ltd.,
after he bought it in about 1984. He became Managing Director when he moved
to Hong Kong. The company dealt in electronic games and thus his "Spacie
Machines" operated 24/7, (these were not gambling machines).
The downfall of this business came when the epidemic SARS hit the residents
living in the apartments occupying the same building in which his business
was located. His only option was to shut down the business and leave
immediately. On 15th September 1988 The South China Morning Post printed a
photo of Dick with the fireman who had rescued him after a fire broke out
one night in a high-rise hotel in which he was staying. Just in the nick of
time, before he was about to jump to certain death, a ladder was finally
found that just reached to his floor and so, dressed only in his sleeping
shorts and blackened all over with smoke, he was saved.
In the Philippines he bought a mahogany plantation in Santa Fe on the Island
of Panay and had a house built there for his family, later purchasing a
sugar plantation. On one occasion when shots were fired and many sustained
gunshot wounds Dick discovered that the injured had been refused medical
treatment on the grounds that they were unable to pay. Dick immediately paid
for the treatment of every one of the victims He and his family left the
Philippines and returned to New Zealand after learning of a plot to kidnap
his daughter. Dick sold his North Shore rental house and then bought a motel
in South Auckland. It was during his time at the motel that he was diagnosed
with Motor Neuron Disease and with the rather rapid progression of the
disease the decision was made to return to the Philippines. The typhoon in
2013 was devastating but Dick bravely clung to life. He died on 9.3.2014 in
Santa Fe, Panay Island. Dick's outstanding quality was his exceedingly
compassionate, kind and generous nature. He would literally give the shirt
off his back to help a friend. It is noteworthy that in his last difficult
months his friends rallied to assist in every way that they could.
Dick was cremated on the Island of Ilo Ilo. 3 chn.

Thomas Dawkes 1767-1835, Parish Clerk of All Saints by Darren Bedingfield.
Darren has also done a summary of James Brown who married Thomas's daughter
Amy Dawkes. James' great granddaughter, Amy Mary Spenlove Brown was my great
grandfather's sister. She donated a portrait of James Brown which is at the
museum in Leamington Spa and is shown in the article about James.
She also donated several paintings that she herself did, along with many other
items- 51 in all.

APPENDICES a. ABBREVIATIONS: b born, bp baptised, c about, d died, df de facto, m married, m1 married 1stly, m2 married 2ndly, sp- spouse ............................................................................. b. DATES I often use the English convention, that is, month after day. So 3.4.1770 is 3rd April, not March 4. When known, the dates and places of birth and death follow each name. ............................................................................. c. THE NUMBERING SYSTEMS - by example. In each tree, the initial ancestor is given ID number 0, & generation number 0. His or her children are given ID numbers 1,2,3,... & generation number 1. The children of person ID 3 say, are given ID numbers 31,32,33,... & generation number 2. The generation numbers are useful when searching for parents, sibs & children, as these can be some distance from them on this page. EXAMPLE: 11356 5-Emma DEANE c1812 English House, Newnham Murren (i) The ID number 11356 tells us that she is the 6th child of the person above her with ID 1135. " 5-" tells us that she is 5th generation, counting the initial ancestor as generation 0. So, to find her parents, just search back from her for " 4-". This gives 1135 4-Thomas DEANE b 2.1.1779 St Magnus The Martyr, City Of London, ... m1 18.12.1802 Sunbury on Thames sp-Harriet RUFF 1779 Sunbury on Thames To find Emma's siblings, we can go to her parents then search forwards for " 5-", until the prefix 1135 changes. Or, we can search from Emma, backwards for older sibs, and forwards for younger sibs. To find her children, search forwards from her for " 6-". ............................................................................. d. SOME LINKS ON THE WEB
