By: Leonard Russell Maughan

E-Mail

Born 11 November 1818 in North Carolina

Married 6 October, 1844

Died 29 September 1862 in Arkansas

LEONARD RUSSELL MAUGHAN (4th Son of Otis) and

Great Granson of Albert Garlington Maughan

My generation was about the last to be born at home. Dr. Sullivan came to our farm home (home was six miles NE of Sanger, Denton County, TX, just north of the Dallas/Ft Worth area) and delivered me with the help of an aunt and a

neighbor woman. A lake now covers our family farm. We had neither electricity nor running water when I was born. When I was about 10 two of my uncles, who worked for the telephone company, salvaged some old equipment; wire, glass insulators, hand crank telephones, etc. and we installed a family telephone system. It only connected our families at first but later we were able to talk through the national system. Our number was four long rings and one short ring.

Life on the farm was about the same for everyone. I was driving a tractor before I started attending school. The school bus stop was one-half mile from our house and we walked to the bus stop every day, rain or shine. Upon return from school, my chore was to collect the eggs, which we took to town Saturday and sold. I usually got a quarter and went to the movies, bought popcorn and had an ice cream at the drug store after the movie. When the weather was warm, we would go barefoot to school. It was a good life but I decided not to follow my Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather's occupation. I joined the U. S. Coast Guard, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer, W3, after 22 years of service. I now reside in Lafayette, Louisiana with my wife, Karolyn and am semi-retired.

In 1991 I and sat down to enter my family history into a computer genealogical database. I was unable to remember the names of Dad's brothers and sisters (They were all deceased). Mom had some information that was compiled over the years and I found that Cousin Bill Maughan had a copy of our family Bible which he sent to me. Cousins Nannie Pearl and Marie provided abundant information about the family. My thanks to them for their help in my research.

Equipped with this information, a letter writing campaign to relatives was initiated. I have tried to accumulate as much knowledge as possible. My next step was to contact the Mormon Church and look at their genealogical records. I found several Maughan's but none that I could claim as "family." One John Maughan died in Arkansas that caused me to wonder if he might be the mysterious "John Mohan" from the family Bible. I contacted the person who submitted the genealogical record to the Mormon Church and he directed me to Gilford Jones, 258 Cautherine Heights, Hot Springs AR 71901. Simultaneously I was checking the Arkansas census for 1850 and 1860 when "POW" there it was. Albert G. Maughan and in the next house, John Maughan, wife Harriet and children corresponding to the names in the Bible! It all fit perfectly, the Bible and the census. This made the connection to Cousin Gilford Jones who had traced back to John but did not know that Albert G. existed.

The family Bible indicates Great Grandfather A. G. married Cynthia Petty in 1844. On "Prodigy" I posted messages requesting information about the Petty family. An answer stated the Petty family had produced a family newsletter for about ten years and listed the address of the last publisher. She advised me that Cynthia's name was in their database and sent several Petty family group sheets with direct linkage to Great Grandfather Albert G. In addition, all of GGM Cynthia's siblings were listed.

In the 1800's, most everyone was on the move West. I have found it to be unusual to find the same family in the same county (or state) on two census reports. It is my belief that the father of Great Grandfather A. G. was born in North Carolina and his mother in Virginia. John Maughan lived until 1912 and indicated on all the census records that his parents were born in NC/VA. A. G. was born in North Carolina, married in either Bibb County, Georgia or Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Great Aunt's Mary and Sarah were born in Alabama (1847 & 1849), and Grandfather Albert S. was born in Georgia (1852). GGM Cynthia Petty, died of "woman's disease" (childbirth) in 1859 (Bismark, Arkansas) and GGF died in 1862 (Arkadelphia) leaving the three children orphans. I have not found any information on Mary or Sarah and I do not know how Grandfather Albert S. got to Wise County Texas.

No record has been found showing service in the military through the Civil War for any of my known Maughan family. The date, place, or cause of A. G.'s death is not verified. No parents or siblings of A. G. or John have been found. My research was submitted to the Mormon Church in hopes that someone will connect with our family and provide the link that I so desperately need. I was a subscriber to "CompuServe" (computer information system) that had a genealogy forum. I uploaded our family information anticipating that someone also is researching families that cross our line. Also, I have listed information on Roots Web hoping for a connection.

I found (in 1994) a group of Maughan's that reside in Alabama and were in the same areas that GGF A. G. traveled. They trace their roots back to a James Maughan who married Polly Stadler on 29 Jul 1809 in Caswell County, NC, and I believe that there must be come connection since we were in the same areas at the same time in history. I have not found the connection but---the search continues . . .

ALBERT STANFORD MAUGHAN
(Grandfather of Leonard Russell Maughan)

Albert Stanford and Georgia Annie [Guinn] MAUGHAN  Family                                                about 1910

Looking at this picture, Emmitt is on the far Right, the woman beside him is Myrtle Maude Morrow-Maughan and George Washington Maughan is beside her with the hair parted in the center. . The infant is their first child James. This is a fact because Max has a picture of the three of them probably taken on the same day. Therefore the child in the front with the ringlets is the youngest child of Albert and Georgia - Ida Myrl. The next youngest child to the far right is Willie Carl, leaving my father Otis to the left of Albert Standford.  John Clifford is behind Otis in the back row.  Next to John in the back row is Albert Iva.  The woman is Pearl Maughan and beside her, the tall man back row, is John Boyd her husband

Grandfather was born in Georgia in 1852 and died in Leo, Wise, Texas in 1940 at the age of 88. He reportedly was living with his Uncle James William & Aunt Louisa Frances Parker PETTY when, at age 28, he married 15 year old Georgia Annie Guinn of Aurora, Wise, Texas (1880). Grandmother was the seventh of nine children of George W. and Catherine PULSE Guinn, both born in Tennessee. There was a reference to a "Fort Guinn" but I believe it to be untrue. It is probably just a feeling the Guinn's had with eight girls and one boy running around the house! The Guinn's reportedly had some fine race horses on their farm in Aurora, Texas. I have limited research of my aunts/uncles on the Guinn side of the family.

While looking for siblings of Grandmother, I ran across a very interesting story. In the late 1800's/early 1900's there was a report of a UFO that crashed near Aurora (East of Boyd, Texas on Hwy. 114) and the alien was buried somewhere in this area. Denying this story, the Wise County Genealogical Association stated that a newspaperman wanted to increase circulation and printed the story that will not go away. Great Grandmother Guinn (Catherine Pulse) may be related to Davie Crockett of "The Alamo" fame. (There is no evidence as of this date). From their names, I conclude that they were of German extract. I also remember Dad having a book written in German. Grandmother's sisters married into the THOMPSON, HUBBARD, NICHOLS, CARTER, and SULLIVAN families.

Grandfather was very good with his hands. He could make almost anything. I am not sure if he owned the land where they lived in Leo but know that some of his grown children lived with them from time to time. He said "Ah Shaw" when upset and Grandmother would scold him for his language! Grandmother died while living with her daughter Pearl (Mrs. Joe) Boydston in Sanger, Texas     BUREN OTIS MAUGHAN (Father of Leonard Russell Maughan)

Buren Otis Maughan and wife, Thelma Cockrill Maughan

Dad was born in Paradise, Wise, TX (1899) and died in Gordonville, Grayson, TX (1974) (at their camp on Lake Texoma). Dad married Katie Hammons and produced three sons. Katie died in childbirth in 1934. Dad then married my mother, Thelma Cockrill, in 1935 and I was born in 1940. Dad was five feet, ten inches tall and weighed about 160 pounds. He had blue eyes and brownish-blond hair. His body was very hairy. Dad was the family dentist and pulled many of my cousin's teeth. He also was a pretty good barber; cutting hair with a hand powered clipper. Dad loved kids, was a Master Mason, and a member of the Church of Christ. I remember him as a very kind and gentle person whom rarely, if ever, said anything bad about anyone. He shaved every day; not once do I ever remember seeing him with a "5 o'clock shadow."

Dad was a farmer and later took up the plumbing trade. He worked for North Texas State University after they sold the farm in Sanger and moved to Denton in 1958. Dad was a very hard worker and although he was forty years older, I could never keep up with him. In his earlier years he had desired to be an engineer for the railroad but did not achieve that dream.

Our farm was four miles east of Sanger on the Sanger-Pilot Point Highway, then north two miles to the banks of Elm Creek. (It was pronounced ELL-UM) Our house was on the high ground above the creek bottom. We did not farm the high ground very much because it was not fertile. Most of the crops came from the "bottom." I can remember the heavy rains when our crops, fences, and everything else went down the creek with the water. During one bad flood our whole haystack just floated down the creek. Dad just built the fences back and planted a new crop for the next year.

Dad started farming with horse drawn equipment and about the time I was born (1940), he was purchased a tractor to replace the horses. That must have been a real achievement. He purchased a yellow Minneapolis-Moline tractor with a cab and hand clutch. Mom usually drove this tractor and I would sleep in the floorboard. This was the tractor that I would drive at the age of 4 or 5 while mom & dad would pick corn.
