Grave of Reuben Cole
1778 - 1856

Grave site of Reuben Cole,  (son of John Cole, born Nov. 9, 1728 in St. Paul Chester, PA and died 1797 in Richmond County NC. and Jane Bounds Cole and brother of our William Cole), is located in  Kemper Co., MS on the Jackson Rd. between Moscow and DeKalb, MS near family farm in Klondike, MS.

 

Generation 1

Reuben Cole born 1778 in NC and died April 25, 1856.  He was son of John Cole and Jane Bounds.  He married Celia Wadsworth. They moved to Kemper Co. MS.

Generation 2

Martha Wadsworth Cole (born May 27, 1824 in Jones County, Georgia and died 1902), daughter of Reuben Cole and Celia Wadsworth, married Thomas Horton Morton on Sept. 30, 1842.

 
Generation 3

Children of Martha Wadsworth Cole and Thomas Horton Morton were:

1.  Everett G. Morton b. March 1, 1844 d. May 9, 1915.
2.  Celia Ann Morton b. Dec. 12, 1845 and died in infancy.
3.  Reuben Oliver Morton b. Oct. 27, 1847 and died Feb. 28, 1936.
4.  Lydia Jane Morton  b. Dec. 3, 1849  d. Feb. 18, 1933.  Never married.
5.  Judson Cole b. Oct. 3, 1852 and died Feb. 18, 1846.
6.  Anna Morton  b. May 11, 1854. Died in infancy.
7.  Henry Clay Morton b. April 17, 1856 and died Jan. 4, 1944. Married (1) Callie Rush on Dec. 1, 1881.
      and (2) Ollie Perkins.
8.  Thomas Jesse Morton b. Dec. 17, 1857 and died June 30, 1932.  Never married.
9.  James David Morton b. June 30, 1859 and died Nov. 1, 1946.
10.  Mattie Josephine Morton  b. May 27, 1861 and died Aug. 23, 1934.
11.  John Morton  b.  Feb. 9, 1863.  Died young.  Twin with Sallie.
12.  Sallie Morton b. Feb. 9, 1863 and died July 5, 1895. Twin with John.  Married Tom Lyle in 1881.
13.  Willie L. Morton  b. March 29, 1865 and died June 6, 1896.  Never married
14.  Hollinger Ross Morton  b. Feb. 2, 1867 and died June 23, 1951.  Married Cora Treadway
15.  Mary Ella Morton  b. Sept. 27, 1868 and died April 1, 1952.  Married Tom Lyle.

Children of Henry Clay Morton and (1) Callie Rush  (2) Ollie Perkins were:

1.  Paul Horton Morton b. Nov. 11, 1882 and died Jan. 13, 1889.
2.  Troupe Cole Morton b. Aug. 31, 1884 and died Feb. 22, 1922.
3.  Everette Griswold Morton b. March 25, 1886 and died Jan. 2, 1984.
4.  William Rush Morton b. Aug. 7, 1888 and died May 2, 1980.
5.  Irene A. Morton b. Aug. 4, 1890 and died 1992.
6.  Henry Clay Morton, Jr. b. Sept. 17, 1892 and died 1989.
7.  Mary Lela Morton b. June 22, 1894 and died Jan. 1, 1961.
8.  Thomas Jefferson Morton b. June 30, 1896 and died Sept. 8, 1970.
9.  Lowry Rush Morton b. May 25, 1898 and died March 21, 1964.
10.  Martha Lou Morton b. July 1, 1900 and died July 6, 1998.
11. John Arch Morton b. July 19, 1902 and died Oct. 27, 1903.
12.  Melva Darnell Morton b. May 11, 1908 and died Aug. 1989. (By second marriage with Ollie Perkins.)

Fourth son, William Rush Morton, Sr.,  was born Aug. 7, 1888 and died May 2, 1980.  Married Lillian Lucille Mayfield on Oct. 8, 1921. She was born Sept. 6, 1903 and died July 27, 1985.  They had three daughters:

1.  Lola Lucille Morton, born May 24, 1922 and died Jan. 27, 1907.  Married Edgar Ford Knight on Aug. 16, 1963.  He was born Jan. 25, 1920 and died March 22, 1986.  There were two stepchildren:  (1) Henry Ford Knight, born Dec. 25, 1954,  and (2) Betty Lee Knight, born April 22, 1960.  There was one son by Edgar Ford Knight: (1) John Morton Knight, born Oct. 7, 1964, married Deborah Brown, born May 19, 1991. There was one step-son, Beau Brown. 

2.  Ida Florence Morton, born Oct. 30, 1923, married Leroy William Nelson on March 8, 1942 and divorced in 1948.  One son from this marriage: (1) Michael Leroy Nelson, born Feb. 23, 1943, married Betty Boyd Leonard on Aug. 22, 1965.  There were two children: (1) Laura Michelle Nelson, married Michael Angelo Rodriquez-Chapman on Feb. 4, 1995.  They had two children: (1) Natalie Elise Rodriquez-Nelson, born May 21, 1996 and (2) Matthew Oliver Rodriquez-Nelson, born Aug. 4, 1998.  Divorced Dec. 1902.  Married Eric Miller on June 12, 2004, no children from this marriage. (2) Michael Leonard (Lee) Nelson born July 21, 1969 married Stephanie Lynn Coggins on March 1, 1997. They had one son, Michael Warbington Nelson, born Nov. 5, 2000.

3.  Callie Sue Morton, born March 12, 1927 and died Dec. 9, 2001.  Married Edward J. O'Rourke, born  March 18, 1952 and died March 23, 1974.  One daughter, Susan Lucille, stillborn. (Information on William Rush Morton, Sr. family furnished by Buddy Arnold.)

1.  Eunice Morton Children: John and Kathleen.
2.  Albert Morton Children: Albert and Brinkley, who became Episcopal Bishop in San Diego, CA.
3.  Holly Lewis Morton
4. Cora Elizabeth Morton.  A Latin teacher.  Never married.
5.  Lynnie Morton
6.  Mary Ella Morton

Children of Mary Ella Morton and Tom Lyle were:

1.  Sarah Lyle
2.  William Lyle
3.  Matthew Lyle
4.  Eloise Lyle
5.  Richard Lyle
6.  James Lyle
7.  Robert Lyle

Henry Clay Morton's daughter, Martha Lou Morton, married Hugh Wallace Markline on
       July 30, 1936.  One child: Martha Ann Markline born  Feb. 4, 1940 married Harry L. Hopkins on
       Aug. 19, 1961.

Their children are:
1. Peter Ashley Hopkins b. June 14, 1963 m. Marguerite Williams on June 1, 1991. Their children are:
    a.  James Cole Hopkins b. Jan. 28, 1995
    b.  Taylor Markline Hopkins b. Aug. 12, 1998
2.  Heather Caroline Hopkins b. June 29, 1966. Married Richard Baker Dec. 28, 1991, divorced 1998. 
     They have one child:
      a.  John Caleb Baker b. June 1, 1995.
