| Sister Martha Cole Morton was born in Jones
County, Georgia, May the 27th, 1824 and died at her home near
Meridian, Miss. January 24 (16th), 1902. In 1841 she moved
with her parents, Reuben and Celia Cole, from Georgia to Kemper
County, Miss. About one year after her arrival at her new home
and adopted State she was united in marriage to T. H. Morton,
November 20th, 1842. In 1848 she and her husband were baptized
upon a profession of faith into fellowship of Pauticfew Baptist
Church, Kemper County, Miss, by Rev. Michael Ross, a most godly and
efficient preacher of that section among the Baptist. Two
years later she and her husband went into the organization of a new
church, known as the West Kemper Baptist Church, under the
leadership of Michael Ross. There she and her husband
continued their membership until 1879, which dates the time of
removal to the vicinity of Meridian. She and her devoted and consecrated husband became members of the Poplar Springs Church, near
Meridian, to the time of their death.
Sister Morton was the mother of a large family, both sons and daughters, some of whom preceded her in their departure from life. She was a splendid type of the old Southern woman, now lamentably growing all too scarce. She was refined, intellectual, deeply pious, a lover of her own home, her family and her church. She was loyal to her Savior, kind to the poor, helpful to the needy, tender and loving to all. She was cheerful in all circumstances of life, her cheerful disposition, her forceful personality, her rich experiences in the divine life, and her splendid poise of character, made her a benediction to her church, a blessing to the world. Her life was a finished life. She loved and served her Master, and her loved ones through more than fifty years. She grew old and tired. She is not, for the Lord has taken her to join her long useful and devoted husband, who proceeded her in death by a few years. May the Lord put into the hearts of the children to follow her footsteps as she followed Christ. 1902 |
