research on Moses Stapp.Stepp, in 1780/81 he found the beautiful Tugaloo

there. However, after being captured and tortured by the Cherokee Indians,

how wonderful the land was.

Notes for COLBAY STAPP:
COLBAY STAPP MARRIED FIRST TO RACHEL NATIONS AND HAD ELEVEN CHILDREN. I DO
NOT HAVE THE NAMES OF ALL OF COLBAY'S CHILDREN WITH RACHEL. AFTER RACHEL
DIED, COLBAY MARRIED 2ND TO MARY MARGARET CONNOR MILLER, WIDOW OF PETER ON
16 SEPT 1855. MARY MARGARET MILLER HAD TWO CHILDREN FROM HER FIRST
MARRIAGE.
THE STORY WAS RELATED TO ME BY JAMES HOWELL....AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE
STAPP FAMILY...THAT COLBAY GOT THE STEP-DAUGHTER PREGNANT. I HAVE NO IDEA
WHAT THE DATE WAS, BUT THE STORY GOES THAT THE GIRL WAS SENT AWAY TO HAVE
THE CHILD AT RELATIVES OFF SOMEWHERE. AT ANY RATE, BECAUSE OF THE SCANDAL
INVOLVED., THE OLDER SET OF CHILDREN...NOW PRESUMEABLY GROWN...LEFT
PICKENS COUNTY AND MOVED ELSEWHERE. THE SECOND SET OF CHILDREN LOST TRACK
OF THEM. YEARS LATER, THE ILLEGITIMATE DAUGHTER, NAMED LUCY, RETURNED TO
PICKENS COUNTY...NOW A GROWN WOMAN. LUCY WAS REJECTED BY THE OTHER STAPP
CHILDREN BUT JOHN JAMES STAPP AND HIS FAMILY TOOK HER IN. [SHE WOULD HAVE
BEEN A HALF-SISTER TO HIM...AS WELL AS A HALF-NIECE]. INDEED, HIS
DESCENDANT STATED THAT LUCY IS BURIED IN JOHN STAPP'S CEMETERY PLOT IN THE
GORDO CEMETERY.
Note: In the Gordo Cemetery, where Colbay's son John Stapp is buried, lies
the grave of another that I don't recognize. Annie Elizabeth Stapp, b. Oct
11, 1883, d. March 19, 1940.
Note: from an old newspaper article "from AGE HERALD" dated October 1,
1884. (Believe this paper must have been located in the Birmingham area]
"An Age reporter was entertained yesterday with some interesting
reminiscences of the state of things in this part of the country half a
century ago, by Mr. Colby Stapp, a venerable citizen of Pickens County,
who moved from this country in 1834. He was born in Pendleton District, SC
in 1800 and came here in 1817. He passed through then prospecting but in
1821 returned and settled near the big spring in southside. There were
Creek Indians and deer and other wild game in abundence.
Mr. Stapp mentioned several old neighbors: Judge E. W. Peck, now age 86
and living in Tuscaloosa; Hosea Holcumbe, Baptist Minister; and Gibson
Murray, Presbyterian minister; Mr. Hunnicutt, school teacher and Billy
Colley, Blacksmith and a Mr. McAdory.
Mr. Stapp did not find what he came to see. He wanted another look at his
old home but to his amazement he cannot even tell where it stood.
Messrs. Green Carver and Phillip Noland, elderly neighbors of Mr. Stapp
are with him. All are guests of Colonel John T. Terry."
[Note: It appears to me that this article proves that Colbay (and probably
his brother William) moved from S.C. to Alabama ca 1817 (or shortly after
their father died ca 1816); settled in 1821 in Birmingham area but in
1834, took land in Pickens County and moved there. The two gentlemen with
Colbay were Green Carver (married to Martha Stapp...dau of William) and
Phillip Noland (married to Annie Stapp...dau of William, nephews by
marriage of Colbay Stapp). Both are ancestors of mine...Green being my
gr-gr grandfather and Phillip Noland being my gr-grandfather.
COLBAY STAPP IS LISTED IN "EARLY SETTLERS OF PICKENS CO, ALABAMA 1850"
ALONG WITH HIS FAMILY AS HAVING 80 ACRES OF LAND PURCHASED 2/10/1836 AND 4
ACRES 10/6/1830.

April 1865, Union forces rampaged through Pickens County, burning
courthouse in Carrollton. Following that they turned southeast toward
Stapp's Mill and burned that; raiders also terrorized the nearby Noland
Plantation and family members' homes and farms.

In 'Pickens County Alabama History and Families", " In 1874, the Tombigbee
went on a rampage and destroyed land, animals and buildings. Many lives
were lost. Warehouses in Pickensville were washed away. All the houses on
the Stapp, Gilkey, Crim and Caraway farms were destroyed. In some place
the soil for a depth of 10 feet was swept away with sand and gravel
covering the once cultivated land. The U.S. government sent 1000 tents
into the area to house the homeless." I am not sure which Stapp farm this

Grandson, James Howell, told us that Colbay Stapp had gotten his

Many years later, the child...now a fully grown woman...showed up in
Gordo. None of the other family members would have anything to do with
her, but John James Stapp took her into his home. Lucy Lavender Stewart
was, after all, his half sister. At her death, James Howell allowed Lucy
to be buried in the plot of John James Stapp, lying next to James Howell's
lot. According to her stone, Lucy Lavender was born Dec 27, 1872 and died
Jan 28, 1958. James Howell was born August 20, 1911 and died Aug 6, 1990.

R.I. and the others went to Norfolk, VA for Training. They enlisted

Stapp was son of Postell Stapp (son of Colbay Stapp) and Mattie Lancaster;
Edgar Stapp was the son of Jesse Martin Stapp (son of Colbay Stapp) and
Mary Alabama Freeman; William Stapp was son of Robert Lee Stapp (son of

AL, and died 13 Sep 1902 in Pickens Co., AL.
More About ELIZABETH BEAUGARDE STAPP:
Fact 1: BURIED AT SALEM CEM, PICKENS CO, ALA
Notes for ANDY MONROE FREEMAN:
"I AM TOLD THAT THE MOTHER OF THE FREEMANS...THAT MARRIED FOUR STAPPS...
WAS ELIZABETH (BETTIE) LOVE, DAU OF HENRY O'NEILL LOVE. BETTIE LOVE WOULD
HAVE BEEN FIRST COUSIN OF SALENIA LOVE CARVER. BETTIE LOVE WAS THE
GRAND-MOTHER OF COUSIN ALMA HICKS, WHO IMPARTED MUCH GENEALOGY INFORMATION
YEARS AGO. HOWEVER, THE NAME GIVEN ON CHART IS THAT OF "MARY BALLARD". ALL
THE MEMBERS OF MOTHER'S (MELBA NOLAND) FAMILY CALLED ALMA HICKS "COUSIN".
WHEN I BEGAN ASKING OLDER MEMBERS OF THIS GROUP OF STAPPS, JIM HOWELL,
ALBERT STAPP, ETC....THEY GAVE THE RELATIONSHIP ABOVE. PERHAPS MARY
BALLARD IS THE 2ND WIFE....OR THE FIRST WIFE. COUSIN ALMA WOULD HAVE BEEN
SECOND COUSIN ONCE REMOVED OF REBECCA ELIZABETH CARVER...AND THIRD COUSIN
OF MELBA NOLAND. NOTE: I HAVE SINCE LEARNED (2002) THAT IT WASN'T A "LOVE"
THAT MARRIED MARCUS FREEMAN BUT MARY JANE BALLARD. HER SISTER, REBECCA
BALLARD, MARRIED ROBERT B. LOVE AND WAS THE MOTHER OF HANNAH SALENIA LOVE.
THEREFORE MARY JANE BALLARD FREEMAN WAS THE GRANDMOTHER OF "COUSIN ALMA"
HICKS. Mary Jane's daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Freeman, married a Clanton.
One of their daughters was "Cousin" Alma. Rebecca's daughter, Hannah
Salenia Love, married Jim Carver and one of their daughters was Rebecca
Elizabeth Noland. Cousin Alma and my grandmother, Rebecca Elizabeth
Noland, were second cousins.
Note: The first above conjecture is incorrect. Information of booklets of
Samuel Andrew Hannah
IN THE BOOKLET "A THIRTEENTH BOOK ABOUT HANNAH", BY SAMUEL ANDREW HANNAH,
HE WRITES THE FOLLOWING: The oldest child of Mary Jane [Ballard] Freeman
and Marcus M. Freeman was Andrew "Andy" M. Freeman (Oct 31, 1852 - April
13, 1902] His name is cometimes written as anderson "Andy" M. Freeman but
according to U.S. Census data his first name was Andrew and not Anderson.
I have recently learned that his middle intial "M" stands for Monroe so
his correct full name was Andrew "Andy" Monroe Freeman. As written in
previous booklets, Andy Freeman on Mar 12, 1887 married Elizabeth "Betty"
Beauregard Stapp [July 15, 1861 - March 9, 1938] who was a daughter of
Colbay Stapp [Mar 20, 1800 - May 4, 1892] and his second wife Mary
Margaret Conner [Miller] Stapp (Jan 29, 1820 - April 7, 1909] of Raleigh
Beat of Pickens Co., Ala. Colbay Stapp [1800-1892] was buried in the Unity
Cemetery in Pickens Co., AL and Mary Margaret Conner [Miller] Stapp
[1820-1909] was buried in the Liberty Church Cemetery in Pickens Co., AL.
In census of 1880, Andrew Freeman, age 28, lived in his mother's household
and suffered from dyspepia.

from in NC.] JOHN CARVER, OF AN AGE TO BE GREEN'S FATHER IS SHOWN IN THE

IN 1833/1835 TIME FRAME, THE CARVERS (FROM PERSON CO, NC) MOVED INTO AND
TOOK LAND IN THE GENERAL AREA OF THE PRESENT LOCATION OF LIBERTY PRIMITIVE
BAPTIST CHURCH. TO THE SE, ADJOINING CHURCH PROPERTY, WAS JOHN CARVER. TO
THE NW, ADJOING CHURCH PROPERTY WAS WILLIAM W. CARVER (JOHN'S SON). TO THE
NE OF CHURCH PROPERTY, STANFORD CARVER (JOHN'S SON) ACQUIRED LAND IN 1837.
THIS LAND IS WHERE JAMES MONROE CARVER, GRANDSON OF JOHN CARVER AND SON OF
GREEN CARVER, LATER LIVED.
ABOUT 1837, JOHN CARVER AND HIS FAMILY WERE LISTED AMONG THE FOUNDERS OF
LIBERTY PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH. THE FIRST CEMETERY FOR THAT CHURCH WAS
LOCATED IMMEDIATELY TO THE WEST OF THE FIRST CHURCH...WHICH ITSELF WAS
LOCATED SLIGHTLY TO THE WEST OF THE PRESENT CHURCH BLDG. ACCORDING TO "OLD
TIMERS", INTERVIEWED BEFORE 1960, THE FIRST CHURCH HAD DIRT FLOORS WHEN IT
WAS FIRST FOUNDED AND BUILT. THEY WERE UNSURE WHEN THE SECOND CHURCH WAS
BUILT OR WHY. PERHAPS THE FIRST CHURCH BURNED. IT IS THOUGHT THAT JOHN
CARVER AND HIS WIFE, NANCY, WERE BURIED IN THE ORIGINAL CEMETERY ALTHO
THERE ARE NO LONGER STONES THERE... AND THE GROUND IS BEING FARMED BY
SOMEONE. [THIS INFO FROM A DESCENDANT OF JOHN CARVER]. STILL ANOTHER
DESCENDANT OF JOHN CARVER STATED THAT WHEN SOMEONE NAMED BURKHALTER
ACQUIRED THE OLD CEMETERY PROPERTY, THE STONES WERE TAKEN UP AND STACKED
UNDERNEATH A LARGER TREE ON THE PROPERTY. THE BALANCE OF THE PROPERTY WAS
FARMED. JOHN CARVER DIED IN 1848 [PER CHURCH RECORDS] AND NANCY DIED IN
1855 [PER CHURCH RECORDS]. THE CURRENT LIBERTY CHURCH CEMETERY LAND WAS
GIVEN TO THE CHURCH PRIOR TO 1896 BY JOHN'S SON, GREEN CARVER, B. 1828, D.
1904, AND THE FIRST ONE BURIED THERE WAS HIS 2ND WIFE: MARTHA STAPP
CARVER, IN 1896.
TO THE EAST OF THE CHURCH, SAME ROAD, AND VERY NEAR TO THE CHURCH, WERE
SEVERAL OLD HOMES. THE FIRST HOUSE, A LOG HOUSE IS WHERE GREEN CARVER AND
MARTHA STAPP CARVER LIVED IN 1871 WHEN THEIR THIRD DAUGHTER, MOLLIE
CARVER, WAS BORN [PER HER GRANDDAUGHTER]. PERHAPS THIS WAS ORIGINALLY THE
HOME OF JOHN CARVER AND NANCY CARVER [GREEN'S PARENTS]. CERTAINLY, THE
ORIGINAL LAND OF JOHN'S WAS THIS AREA. IN ALL PROBABILITY, GREEN CARVER
RAISED ALL HIS CHILDREN IN THIS HOUSE. HIS FIRST FOUR CHILDREN WERE:
JOSEPH, B. 1849; JOHN, B. 1848; JAMES, B. 1851 AND NANCY, B. 1853. BY HIS
SECOND MARRIAGE (IN 1855) HE HAD THREE DAUGHTERS: ANN ELIZABETH, B. 1866;
SALLY, B. 1867 AND MOLLY, B. 1871. WE KNOW THAT JAMES MONROE CARVER
[MARRIED HANNAH SALENIA LOVE, DAU OF ROBERT B. LOVE] WOULD LATER LIVE DOWN
THE ROAD FROM THE CHURCH [FORMERLY LAND PURCHASED BY BROTHER STANFORD
CARVER] AND HOUSES #1 (GREEN'S HOUSE] AND HOUSE #2 (POSTELL STAPP'S HOUSE,
LATER LESTER NOLAND'S HOUSE], WHERE HE RAISED HIS FAMILY. I NOTE IN
RECORDS THAT THIS AREA IS REFERRED TO AS THE RALEIGH COMMUNITY. JIM CARVER
WAS THE PREACHER AT LIBERTY CHURCH [AND SALEM PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH].
MY GRANDMOTHER, REBECCA ELIZABETH CARVER, WAS RAISED IN THIS HOUSE.
THE WILLIAM STAPP FAMILY, B. 1802-D.1880, FAMILY SETTLED IN PICKENS COUNTY
ABOUT 1839/40 IN THE OLNEY AREA. THIS COMMUNITY WAS TO THE SOUTHWEST OF
LIBERTY CHURCH. WILLIAM STAPP WAS THE FATHER OF MARTHA STAPP CARVER.
WILLIAM STAPP WAS THE BROTHER OF COLBAY STAPP {BOTH THESE MEN ARE BURIED
AT UNITY CEMETERY AT OLNEY}. COLBAY STAPP, B. 1800, D. 1892, WAS MARRIED
TWICE. IN HIS SECOND MARRIAGE, HE HAD FOUR SONS AND A DAUGHTER. ONE OF
THOSE SONS WAS POSTELL STAPP. POSTELL LIVED FOR A TIME IN HOUSE #2.
ACCORDING TO JEWELL NOLAND, WIFE OF J. L. NOLAND, JR., HOUSE #2, NEAR
LIBERTY CHURCH WAS PURCHASED BY PHILIP NOLAND AND HIS WIFE, ANNIE STAPP
NOLAND...FORM POSTELL STAPP, B. 1859. [ANNIE AND MARTHA STAPP WERE FIRST
COUSINS TO POSELL STAPP] FURTHER, POSTELL'S BROTHER, ROBERT LEE STAPP,
WOULD MARRY THE WIDOW OF JOSEPH CARVER, SON OF GREEN CARVER ABOUT 1887.
BECAUSE THEY LIVED IN CLOSE PROXIMITY?
HOWEVER, IN A LETTER DATED JAN 3, 1996, J.L. NOLAND, JR, STATED THAT
PHILIP AND ANNIE NOLAND NEVER OWNED HOUSE #2. HE SAID HE THOUGHT SO FOR A
NUMBER OF YEARS, BUT LEARNED WHEN HIS MOTHER DIED FROM OLD RECORDS, ETC.,
THAT ANNIE STAPP NOLAND HAD ALWAYS LIVED IN THE HOUSE AT PLEASANT GROVE,
ALA. ACCORDING TO CENSUS RECORDS, THE HOUSEHOLD OF PHILIP AND ANNIE STAPP
IN 1870 AND 1880 WAS IN PLEASANT GROVE...IN AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT HOUSE
THAN HOUSE #2... AND ONE POINTED OUT BY MY GRANDFATHER, JOHN THOMAS
NOLAND, B. 1875, AS HIS HOME WHEN HE WAS GROWING UP. AS STATED ABOVE, THEY
NEVER BOUGHT THE #2 HOUSE. J.L. NOLAND STATES THAT HIS FATHER J.L. NOLAND,
SR., AND WIFE LULA LIVED WITH ANNIE WHEN THEY FIRST MARRIED... AND THEIR
FIRST FOUR CHILDREN WERE BORN IN THE HOUSE AT PLEASANT GROVE. FOLLOWING
THAT, THEY MOVED FROM THE PLEASANT GROVE COMMUNITY TO LIBERTY CHURCH
COMMUNITY AT KENNY HILL...AND AFTER THAT TO HOUSE #2. JAMES LESTER NOLAND
PURCHASED THE HOUSE FROM THE MARTIN BROTHERS (TED MARTIN AND WIFE VIOLA
KIRK MARTIN AND HIS BROTHER FORMED THE MARTIN BROTHERS LUMBER MILL IN THAT
AREA]. VIOLA KIRK MARTIN WAS THE DAUGHTER OF MOLLIE CARVER WHO MARRIED MR.
KIRK {WHO DIED EARLY} AND LATER MARRIED JOHN DANIEL. VIOLA KIRK WAS SISTER
OF NANNIE MAE KIRK, AND THEY WERE GRANDDAUGHTERS OF GREEN CARVER. POSTELL
STAPP AND FAMILY EVENTUALLY MOVED TO TUSCALOOSA AND OPENED A GENERAL
STORE. DESCENDANTS OF MOLLIE SAY THAT SHE LIVED WITH PHILIP AND ANNIE
STAPP NOLAND PART OF HER CHILDHOOD BECAUSE OF HER MOTHER'S ILLNESS.
[UNLESS MARTHA STAPP CARVER WAS ILL FOR A VERY LONG TIME, I QUESTION THIS.
MARTHA DIED IN 1896 AND IS BURIED AT LIBERTY CEMETERY. MOLLIE MARRIED TO
MR. KIRK IN 1890 AND LIVES NEXT DOOR TO GREEN CARVER AND MARTHA STAPP
CARVER IN 1891 WHEN HER FIRST CHILD WAS BORN. SO PERHAPS IT WAS MOLLIE
KIRK AND HER HUSBAND THAT BOUGHT THE HOUSE FROM POSTELL STAPP.... AND THE
MARTIN BROTHERS BOUGHT THE HOUSE MUCH LATER FROM MOLLIE AND HER NEW
HUSBAND, MR. DANIEL. [AGAIN, REMEMBER THAT TED MARTIN WAS MARRIED TO
MOLLIE'S DAUGHTER, VIOLA] JAMES LESTER NOLAND AND HIS FAMILY DIDN'T MOVE
INTO THE HOUSE UNTIL ABOUT 1920 OR A LITTLE AFTER. IN THE PLEASANT GROVE
AREA IS FOREST BAPTIST CHURCH. PHILIP NOLAND'S OBIT SAID HE WAS A MEMBER
OF THIS CHURCH.
PHILIP NOLAND DIED SUDDENLY IN 1889, LEAVING ANNIE WITH TWO SONS AT HOME.
PHILLIP WAS BURIED AT UNITY CEMETERY AT OLNEY... WHERE HIS SON AND
DAUGHTER WERE ALREADY BURIED. ANNIE'S PARENTS, WILLIAM AND MARY MAXWELL
STAPP, DIED AFTER PHILIP AND THEY WERE BURIED NEXT TO PHILIP AND ANNIE'S
CHILDREN... AND PHILIP. ANNIE DIED IN 1928 AT GORDO AT THE HOME OF HER
SON, JOHN THOMAS NOLAND. HER SONS CHOSE TO BURY HER AT LIBERTY CEMETERY
NEXT TO HER COUSIN, R. L. STAPP.
GREEN CARVER'S DAUGHER MOLLIE MARRIED ROBERT KIRK IN 1890. KIRK DIED IN
1899. THEY APPARENTLY MOVED INTO THE HOUSE NEXT TO GREEN CARVER AFTER
THEIR MARRIAGE...HOUSE # 2. MOLLIE'S DAUGHTER NANNIE MAE KIRK WAS BORN IN
THAT HOUSE IN 1891 (ACCORDING TO NANNIE'S DAUGHTER}. ANOTHER DAUGHTER OF
MOLLIE'S, VIOLA KIRK, PROBABLY WAS BORN IN HOUSE #2, TOO. VIOLA KIRK
MARRIED TED MARTIN AND LIVED IN HOUSE #2... AND THIS WAS FAMILY THAT SOLD
HOUSE TO JAMES LESTER NOLAND....NOT POSTELL STAPP. [PER J.L. NOLAND, JR.]
MOLLIE CARVER KIRK REMARRIED 2ND TO JOHN DANIEL [BROTHER-IN-LAW OF JAMES
LESTER NOLAND, SON OF PHILIP AND ANNIE STAPP NOLAND], IN 1901. REMEMBER,
IT WAS JAMES LESTER NOLAND THAT BOUGHT THE #2 HOUSE FROM TED AND VIOLA
KIRK MARTIN...DAU OF MOLLIE CARVER KIRK DANIEL, FIVE OR SO YEARS AFTER
1915. IN ALL PROBABILITY, IT WAS ROBERT KIRK AND MOLLIE CARVER KIRK THAT
BOUGHT HOUSE #2 FROM POSTELL STAPP IN 1890. ACCORDING TO FAMILY SOURCES,
GREEN CARVER'S DAUGHTER ANN ELIZABETH JORDAN DIED OF MALARIA IN 1898,
LEAVING SEVERAL SMALL CHILDREN WHO WERE RAISED FOR A TIME BY THEIR AUNT
MOLLIE.
THE SON OF PHILIP AND ANNIE STAPP NOLAND, JAMES LESTER NOLAND, MARRIED
LULA DANIEL (GRAND-DAUGHTER OF ROBERT B. LOVE) IN 1900. APPARENTLY J.L.
AND LULA LIVED WITH ANNIE STAPP NOLAND {PER J.L. NOLAND, JR.} AND THEIR
FIRST FOUR CHILDREN WERE BORN IN HER HOME. THEIR SON, J. L. NOLAND, JR.,
WAS BORN IN 1915. HE STATES THAT AS A SMALL CHILD, HIS PARENTS MOVED INTO
HOUSE #2. IN THE MEANTIME, GREEN CARVER AND HIS SONS HAVE MOVED TO GORDO,
AL AND OPENED A GENERAL STORE. GREEN CARVER WAS LIVING IN GORDO BY 1901
WHEN HE WAS MANAGER OF THE FIRST CITY ELECTION. IN 1900, REBECCA ELIZABETH
CARVER, DAU OF JIM CARVER, MARRIED TOM NOLAND. HER FATHER AND GRANDFATHER
GREEN CARVER BUILT THEM A HOME ON "CARVER ROAD" IN GORDO. JIM'S SONS ALSO
LIVED ON THAT ROAD, AS DID GREEN CARVER. GREEN DIED IN GORDO IN 1904. J.
L. NOLAND, JR., ALSO STATES THAT HIS GRANDMOTHER, ANNIE STAPP NOLAND, AT
TIMES LIVED WITH THEIR FAMILY. HE ALSO STATES THAT WHEN ANNIE STAPP NOLAND
SOLD HER HOME IN PLEASANT GROVE, ALA, SHE MOVED IN WITH HER SON, JOHN
THOMAS NOLAND, IN GORDO, ALA. SHE DID, FROM TIME TO TIME, STAY WITH HER
SON, JAMES LESTER NOLAND. ANNIE STAPP NOLAND WAS CRIPPLED, ACC TO J.L.,
AND HAD TO USE CRUTCHES TO GET AROUND.
ANNIE DIED IN 1928, AT TOM NOLAND'S HOUSE IN GORDO. JAMES LESTER AND LULA
STILL LIVED IN THE HOUSE NEAR LIBERTY CHURCH IN THE 40S WHEN I WAS A CHILD
BECAUSE WE WOULD GO THERE IN THE SUMMERTIME TO GET WATERMELONS.
Note: Many in the Carver family served in the CSA during the Civil War.
Those that we KNOW served are:
Green Carver, in cavalry
John Carver, son; died at Vicksburg, MS (POSSIBLY NOT, SINCE WE REC'D
COMMUNICATION FROM A CARVER LIVING IN INDIANA OR OHIO, WHICH STATED THAT
HIS GR GRANDFATHER HAD BEEN A "JOHN CARVER", FORMERLY OF PICKENS COUNTY,
WHO HAD SURRENDERED AT THE BATTLE OF VICKSBURG, MS BECAUSE HE WAS
DESPERATELY HUNGRY. HE WAS ONLY ABOUT 16 YRS OLD. THE DESCENDANT SAID HE
ALWAYS TOLD HIS 'NORTHERN' FAMILY THAT HE WAS ASHAMED TO RETURN TO PICKENS
COUNTY BECAUSE HE HAD SURRENDERED TO THE YANKEES AND LATER HELPED THE
YANKEES IN THE WAR.
G W Carver, cousin
S.A. Carver, cousin
Wesley Carver, cousin
I am also told that members of his brothers' families served. These
brothers had moved to Texas by time of Civil War and probably served from
that state.

Notes for WILLIAM MAXWELL STAPP:
IN 1966, I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO "COUSIN" ALMA HICKS, B. 1880,
[had been a Clanton] A COUSIN OF MY GRANDMOTHER NOLAND. SHE WAS QUITE
ELDERLY AT THE TIME, BUT ALERT AND SEEMED TO HAVE TOTAL RECALL OF THE
PAST. ONE OF THE STORIES HAD TO DO WITH "OLD MAN BILL STAPP", AND HIS SON
OSCAR. SHE INDICATED THAT "OLD MAN STAPP" WAS THE SON OF WILLIAM STAPP, B.
1802 (WILLIAM MAXWELL STAPP) AND HAD TAKEN OVER THE RUNNING OF THE STORE
OR FARM AND WAS FAIRLY WELL TO DO. AT ANY RATE, LIVING ON HIS FARM IN A
RENT HOUSE WAS A LADY SCHOOL TEACHER AND HER DAUGHTER. OSCAR AND THE GIRL
GREW UP TOGETHER AND WHEN OSCAR WAS IN HIS EARLY 20'S AND THE GIRL WAS IN
HER TEENS, THEY FELL IN LOVE. OSCAR WENT TO HIS FATHER TO TELL HIM THEY
WERE GOING TO BE MARRIED AND "OLD MAN BILL STAPP" HAD A FIT AND ABSOLUTELY
REFUSED HIM PERMISSION TO MARRY. HE WAS SO ADAMANT THAT OSCAR CONTINUED TO
PRESS HIM FOR A REASON....AND FINALLY BILL TOLD HIM THAT HE AND THE GIRL
WERE BROTHER AND SISTER! SEEMED THAT AFTER HE HAD CAUSED THE TEACHER TO BE
PREGNANT, HE LET THEM LIVE IN THE RENT HOUSE FOR FREE AND HELPED THEM
ALONG FINANCIALLY. OSCAR, HORRIFIED, RUSHED TO TELL THE GIRL WHAT THE
PROBLEM WAS. THE GIRL WAS, OF COURSE, HEART-BROKEN AND ASHAMED AND FLED
INTO THE WOODS. THEY FOUND HER LATER....AFTER SHE HAD KILLED HERSELF.
OSCAR WOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS FATHER THEREAFTER, BEGAN DRINKING
HEAVILY, NEVER MARRIED AND DIED A FAIRLY YOUNG MAN. ALMA SAID THAT THE
REASON SHE REMEMBERED THIS SO CLEARLY WAS THAT OSCAR WAS A LITTLE OLDER
THAN SHE, AND THAT SHE AND HER FRIENDS THOUGHT HE WAS VERY HANDSOME AND
THAT THE STORY WAS VERY ROMANTIC. AT ANY RATE, OSCAR, MY GRANDMOTHER AND
ALMA WOULD ALL BE OF THE SAME GENERATION AND I PRESUME THAT ALMA KNEW WHAT
SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT.

BURIED INCLUDING COLBY EDGAR STAPP.
After William Stapp's death in 1880, his son William Maxwell Stapp took
over the store and mill. According to an old store ledger found in trunk
belonging to Annie Stapp Noland, in the years following the civil war and
up until the death of her husband in 1889, her brother W.M. Stapp helped
them out financially with loans and credit at the store. Wm. Maxwell Stapp
was also a veteran of the civil war and served in the same Regt. as
Annie's husband, Philip Noland.

Notes for ANNIE STAPP:
ON JULY 25, 1866 ANNIE STAPP MARRIED PHILIP AUBREY NOLAND AT THE HOME OF
HER PARENTS. PHILIP AUBREY NOLAND WAS A CONFEDERATE VETERAN AND HAD BEEN A
PRISONER OF WAR. PHILIP BUILT A LOG CABIN A FEW MILES AWAY FROM THE STAPP
MILL/HOME. THEY BEGAN RAISING A FAMILY DURING THE HARSH TIMES OF THE
RECONSTRUCTION ERA. IT WAS DIFFICULT FOR A "REBEL" TO FIND WORK. THE CASH
BOOK OF HER FATHER'S REFLECTS THAT OFTEN HE WOULD LOAN MONEY TO PHILIP
NOLAND. FAMILY TRADITION STATES THAT PHILIP WAS A MEMBER OF THE KKK (AS
WERE MOST OF THE FORMER REBELS IN PICKENS CO) AND SHE MUST HAVE LIVED A
FRIGHTENED LIFE WONDERING IF HE WOULD BE CAUGHT AND HUNG. PHILIP WAS ALSO
A MEMBER OF THE MASONIC LODGE AND WOULD RIDE HORSEBACK TO COLUMBUS, MISS
FOR MEETINGS...BUT AGAIN, I AM TOLD THAT SOME OF THOSE MEETINGS WERE KKK
MEETINGS. IN 1889, PHILIP DIED OF ACUTE APPENDICITIS. TWO YEARS BEFORE HIS
DEATH, ANNIE HAD LOST HER ONLY DAUGHTER, THE LOVELY OPHELIA. AFTER THE
DEATH OF HER HUSBAND, ANNIE REMAINED IN HER SMALL LOG HOUSE WITH HER TWO
YOUNGEST CHILDREN. I WONDER HOW SHE SURVIVED? HER PARENTS WERE ALREADY
DEAD AND HER BROTHER, WILLIAM MAXWELL STAPP, OWNED THE STORE AND MILL.
PERHAPS HE HELPED HER, I DON'T KNOW. HER TWO YOUNGEST SONS MARRIED IN
1900. ONE OF THEM, JAMES LESTER, BROUGHT HIS WIFE TO LIVE WITH HIS MOTHER
AND THEY BEGAN THEIR YOUNG FAMILY WHILE LIVING THERE. THE OTHER SON, JOHN
THOMAS NOLAND, MARRIED REBECCA ELIZABETH CARVER, A WELL-KNOWN PREACHER,
AND MOVED INTO A HOME BUILT OR THEM BY HER FATHER IN GORDO, AL. ANNIE
BEGAN TO HAVE HEART PROBLEMS AROUND 1915 AND BECAME CRIPPLED AS WELL. SHE
WALKED THE REST OF HER LIFE ON CRUTCHES. SHE LIVED OUT HER LIFE AT HER
SON'S HOME IN GORDO. FOR BRIEF PERIODS OF TIME, SHE WOULD STAY WITH JAMES
LESTER AND HIS FAMILY AT HIS HOME NEAR LIBERTY CHURCH IN PICKENS CO. ANNIE
DIED AT THE HOME OF JOHN THOMAS NOLAND IN GORDO OF A HEART ATTACK. MY
MOTHER, MELBA, FOUND HER GRANDMOTHER AFTER SHE HAD DIED.
September 17, 1998
In my cedar chest is a special coverlet. This coverlet was woven over one
hundred years ago by Annie Stapp Noland, my great grandmother. She was a
lady of iron will, deep roots and strong convictions and this week marks
the anniversary of her birth in 1844 in Pickens County, Alabama. She was
also a gentle lady, with a loving disposition to her family.
She was born into a well-to-do family. Her father had a mill and a general
store near Olney, Pickens Co., AL. They were slave owners but the members
of the family were expected to work within the family businesses and learn
how to do the menial jobs that slaves normally did. When the civil war
began, several of her brothers joined the CSA. Most of the young men in
the county also left home to fight for the Confederacy. In 1864, the
yankees made a raid through Pickens County, burning the courthouse at
Carrollton and on into the southern part of the county and burned the
Stapp mill and store. About this time, too, the slaves were freed and
their slaves left. Times became extremely hard. One brother was dead. Her
father began to put together another mill and store with what little help
he could find in the vicinity. At the end of the war, Annie married Philip
Noland when he returned home from a prisoner-of-war camp in Illinois. His
father had recently died and his mother and sisters lived on a nearby
plantation.
Philip and Annie set up housekeeping in a log house they built on a piece
of land which had belonged to her father. They lived there throughout
their married life. She had her children in the log house. And, she spun
the thread there for the clothes for her family, the linens for their beds
and their other needs. Raising a family in Pickens County at that time was
rough. Reconstruction was particularly harsh in Pickens County (according
to family stories and publications) and they struggled daily to survive.
The returning Rebs were denied jobs and carpetbaggers came and seized
farms for taxes. The Confederate currency was, of course, worthless; the
families lived hand to mouth.
It took long days and hard, back-breaking work to get a crop of cotton out
of the field....or to grow enough food to feed your family. The
environment bred individuals who were strong and determined. Even though
they worked as hard as they could...it was indeed fortunate that her
father and brother had a store and a mill. Receipts were found that
indicated that they helped Annie and Philip frequently with food items and
flour from the mill to help them get by.
Annie learned to read and write as a child. Her father had seen to it that
all his children were educated. She passed that love for reading and
writing down to her children and grandchildren. Her husband, Philip, had
been a school teacher prior to the civil war so he, too, helped to instill
the love of reading into their children. As was common in the south in
those days, her husband was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of
the Ku Klux Klan. I am sure that those years following the war and during
the height of reconstruction were terrifying ones. Research shows that
much killing and harrassing of former Rebs went on in Pickens County.
During the 70s and early 80s, the KKK fought back against the
carpetbaggers and eventually life in Pickens County began returning to
normal. The former soldiers were able to get work and things became a
little easier. In 1873, her small son, Luther Burton, died. Then in the
early 80s, her parents died as well as her beloved only daughter, Ophelia,
at age 18. When Philip, her husband, died in 1889 of appendicitis, she was
left alone in the log house with her two younger sons. But she survived
with tenacity, courage and love. In her later years, she became crippled
and lived the last few years in Gordo with her son, John Thomas Noland. My
mother, Melba, spent a great deal of time with her grandmother and
listened to Annie's stories about her early days and what she went through
after the war and after she was widowed. Annie brought the coverlet from
the log house and used it on her bed in Gordo. She had woven it during the
worst of the reconstruction period and mother always felt it was precious
because of the love and care Annie had put into it.
When my grandfather died and we went through a lot of the stuff in his
house, Mother found the beloved coverlet in a trunk containing much of
what had belonged to Annie. She took it home with her. She also found in
Annie's trunk a little box full of Confederate money. There, too, was an
old journal...obviously from her father's store, in which she had pasted
numerous poems and obituaries. She had used the old journal as a scrapbook
in which to save things she wanted to keep.

Notes for SARAH JANE/SALLY CARVER:
My uncles, Thomas Edgar Noland and Cayce Noland, sons of Lizzie Carver
Noland, told me that Sallie Carver Bailey, their aunt, lived across the
street from Lizzie. Apparently, Sallie's son-in-law Dr. Kirk, gave her a
great deal of paragoric [an addictive pain killer]. At any rate, when the
boys needed a little spending money, they would crawl under Aunt Sallie's
house and retrieve paragoric bottles to sell. They were 'returnable' at
the drug store. Sallie apparently threw them under the house when she
finished with them. Grandmother learned what they were doing and forbade
them to do it again. Uncle Dutch said that when Sallie died, there was a
"mountain" of paragoric bottles under her house. And that was after the
boys had taken many, many bottles from beneath the house.
Uncle Cayce said that Sallie was "such fun" to be around. She had a great
sense of humor, laughed and kidded the children. She had flaming red hair.
(inherited from the Carvers, no doubt).

the warehouse and family suffered financial woes thereafter. At other
times, owned a cleaning establishment, a cafe, etc. Children said he was

to father's abusiveness. Easily depressed and suicidal. Finally was

COPY OF LETTER POSTMARKED TUSCALOOSA, AL - NOV 22, 1897; ADDRESSED TO MISS
LIZIE CARVER, RALEIGH, PICKENS COUNTY, ALABAMA
Miss Lizzie Carver
Dear Friend:
I will try after so long a time to write you a few lines, but I feel like
it is useless for me to be writing to you for I know you have forgotten me
and care nothing for me, but I am so lonely here on the hall that I have
to do something to pass off the time and I am sure there is only one way I
could pass off the time better than writing to you and that is to be with
you and it seems that I will never have the chance to be with you again
for I know you could come up here and stay awhile if you would and if you
cared anything for me I'm sure you would. I'm sure there is nothing that
would afford me more pleasure than to be with you but if you have
foresaken me I will make the best of it I can.
Lizzie, I am not satisfied here by any means and I don't know that it
would be any better at home, or anywhere else for you have said you would
not have a boy that worked at the hospital. But I knew it before I came
here and I sometimes wish that I had taken your advice and never come to
this place for I know I placed myself where my life will never be any
pleasure to me.
I had jut about as soon be dead as to live as I am living.
Lizzie, tonight eleven weeks ago I was with you althugh it seems almost
like a lifetime with me. But I guess the time has been pleasantly spent
with you, or at least I hope so.
Lizzie, you told me when I was with you last that you was coming up about
the first of November and stay a month. But I guess you forgotten it, or
won't come because I am here.
Lizzie, I guess you went to Union today it was such a beautiful day, and I
hope passed off the time much pleasanter than I have for the day has
seemed almost a week long to me.
Lizzie, I wish you could be here next Sunday. I will be off duty and I
would love to talk with you once more.
Well, I will have to close as it is about locking up time and I am about
half sick anyway with the headache.
Lizzie, please come up as soon as you get this and stay until Christmas.
Bring your fellow with you if you can't come without him. I guess I will
spend a day or two at home Christmas if nothing happens. I mentioned it to
Mr. Crawford today and today he said he would let me off a few days.
I didn't close when I said I would but I will now, hoping to see you soon.
Write if it suits you. So, bye-bye.
Thomas Noland
P.S. Lizzie, I was about to forget to tell you that I have had some
pictures made and if the hawks are bothering your chickens, I will send
you one.
Goodnight, sweet dreams. J.T.N. (Please come)
Note: The hospital he refers to in his letter is Bryce Hospital - where he
eventually died.
On January 3, 1900 John Thomas Noland and Rebecca Elizabeth Carver were
married in Pickens County. Her wedding dress was a beautiful satin and
lace creation with many, many tiny buttons down the back. They moved to
Gordo where her father and grandfather built them a home on Carver Road.
The dress was stored in a trunk which was stored at house after John
Thomas died. Apparently, the tenants living in the house later stole the
dress for it disappeared out of the trunk

Notes for MABEL OPHELIA NOLAND:
Mabel had red hair and hazel eyes. Called 'Red' by her family and friends.
After she left home, she went to work for an attorney in Birmingham, AL.
She married Felix Woodward. They had a daughter that died as an infant.
Felix died shortly thereafter. When WWII began, Mabel went to work for the
Civil Service in Virginia. She was the secretary of General Mark Clark in
Norfolk following WWII. She worked for the civil service until she retired
in 1965. She never remarried. In 1965, she moved to Tuscaloosa and bought
a house. She lived there until she died of bone cancer in 1975. As the
oldest in the Noland family, she was the domineering one. She helped
everyone in her family financially many times. At one point in her life,
she drank to excess but overcame that. She seemingly disliked her father,
John Thomas Noland, intensely. Primarily because of the way he treated her
mother, Lizzie Carver, the whole time she was growing up. After the death
of her mother and after several suicide attempts on the part of her
father, she had him put into an institution where he died.
