From Hough files, Lancaster, SC Library
I have a handwritten document we obtained on a visit to the Camden Archives which states: "Daniel Horton, I, of Albemarle Parish, Surry Co (later Sussex Co), Virginia, married, probably about 1710, Martha Timms, daughter of AMOS TIMMS. Daniel made his will there 18 June 1718 - See Albemarle Parish Register." In a separate record on Daniel, 1, have noted: "Estate settlement, Surry County, Va., B-7-125, on 18 June 1718, returned by Martha Horton." The children of Daniel Horton and Martha Timms listed in the former handwritten document are as follows: Elizabeth, b.abt.1712, m. Hugh Ivy; and, Amos I, b. abt.1714, m. Sarah Peebles.

MARRIAGE: Daniel Horton who married Martha Timms. They lived in Surry County Virginia and Kershaw, S.C. in the late 1600s and early 1700s.
I am researching the Daniel Horton line beginning in Surrey County, VA. Daniel came to VA in 1674 perhaps as an indentured servant, and by 1701 was renting land for farming himself. Daniel's son Amos moved to Lancaster Co, SC. Amos II was a captain in the REvolution under Marion, and after the war moved to Wake county, NC. His son Jesse moved to Ala in 1822 after Amos died.

I thought for years Daniel Horton ( and anyone else specified as arriving in America "under" another person) was indentured to that person.

"Cavaliers and Pioneers" lists two Daniel Hortons arriving in Virginia twelve years apart "under" different men. The Crown it seems paid an incentive to persons responsible for the arrival of new immigrants in the colonies. The arrival of Daniel Horton "under" James Peters indicated James Peters received the specified number of acres offered by the Crown as an incentive.

Interestingly, the book said the incentives were grossly abused by colonists who falsified passenger lists to receive the incentive land. The second Daniel Horton listed was apparently one of these phantom immigrants since the entire list of passengers on the first list is included in the second.

FWIW Timms is also listed "Tymms" ....

There is considerable doubt that the Daniel who arrived under James Peters was in fact the father of Amos because of his age when Amos was born... Possibly Amos' grandfather ????
Descendants of Daniel Horton Generation No. 1 1. DANIEL1 HORTON was born Abt. 1658 in England, and died 1718 in Surrey County, Virginia. He married MARTHA TIMMS Abt. 1695 in Surrey County, Virginia, daughter of AMOS TIMMS. Notes for DANIEL HORTON: Daniel Horton was born in England about 1655-1658. He "came into Nansemond County, Virginia November 10, 1674 under James Peters" according to "Early Emigants, Vol II." This suggests that he was an indentured servant, who in most cases served about seven years before he was free to seek his own way. Daniel is listed in the Isle of Wright County, Viriginia, Rent List for 1701, indicating he was not a landowner at this time but was an independant farmer. In 1704 and 1705 he appears on the Rent List of Nansemond County, Virginia for 200 acres. He signed administrative returns of Robert Carlisle in 1711. Children of DANIEL HORTON and MARTHA TIMMS are: 2. i. ALEXANDER2 HORTON, b. Abt. 1698, Surrey County, Virginia; d. Abt. 1755. 3. ii. JOSEPH HORTON, b. Abt. 1700, Nasamond County, Virginia; d. Abt. 1765, Granville County, North Carolina. 4. iii. ELIZABETH HORTON I, b. Abt. 1704. 5. iv. REBECCA HORTON I, b. Abt. 1706. 6. v. SARAH HORTON I, b. Abt. 1708. 7. vi. AMOS HORTON I, b. 1710, Surry County, Virginia; d. 1791, Lancaster County, South Carolina.

do with the Yankee Hortons, anyway: 1. DANIEL1 HORTON was born Abt. 1658 in England, and died 1718 in Surrey County, Virginia. He married (1) UNKNOWN Abt. 1685 in Nansemond County, Virginia. She died Abt. 1688 in Nansemond County, Virginia. He married (2) MARTHA TIMMS Abt. 1695 in Nansemond County, Virginia, daughter of AMOS TIMMS. She was born Abt. 1675 in England, and died 1745 in Surrey County, Virginia. Daniel Horton was born in England about 1655-1658. He "came into Nansemond County, Virginia November 10, 1674 under James Peters" according to "Early Emigants, Vol II." This suggests that he was an indentured servant, who in most cases served about seven years before he was free to seek his own way. There is confusion over whether Martha was a Newberry or a Carver. I believe it has been resolved to be Newberry as above. This confusion surfaced in some of the work of Vera Marshall who wrote several Thames histories. Rev William Thames b Cumberland Co NC ca 1762 married Lucy Carver. Their children were

xiii. REBECCA HORTON74,75,76, b. 13 May 1786, Kershaw Co, SC; d. 28 May 1865, Henderson, Rusk Co, TX; m. WILLIAM CRAIG, 15 Feb 1806, Kershaw Co, SC.

Notes for WILLIAM CRAIG:
William Craig was born in Camden, Kershaw County, South Carolina, on May 13, 1786 and died in Henderson, Texas, May 25, 1865. He was buried in the Henderson City Cemetery west of the Rusk County Courthouse. His grave is now marked with a Texas State Historical Marker, which was erected November 5, 1978, in commemoration of his sixty-two years of service in the Methodist ministry as a circuit rider. William’s father was William Craig, Sr., who died September 10, 1820 at the age of eighty-four years, and his mother was (most likely) Martha Craig, who died July 23, 1833 at the age of ninety-two years. William married Rebecca Hortense Horton February 15, 1806, and they lived together for over sixty years, becoming the parents of six children. Rebecca was born March 3, 1786 in Camden, South Carolina and died May 13, 1866 in Marshall, Texas. She was the daughter of John Horton and his wife Elizabeth, and the granddaughter of Amos Horton and Sarah Peebles Horton, who left Brunswick County, Virginia, and moved to Craven County, South Carolina, before the American Revolution. John Horton served in the South Carolina Militia in 1779 and died in Kershaw County in 1813. William and Rebecca’s children were: Cynthia Curtis, born November 17, 1807, who married William McClanahan; Elizabeth Izel, born November 19, 1809, who married George Hanzel Wright; John Wesley, born January 6, 1812 and died as a young man; Reuben Terry, born September 9, 1815, who married Margaret Oliver; William De La Fletcher, born July 6, 1817, who married Amanda Jane North; and Usuva Jane, born August 5, 1819, who married Campbell Wright. William Craig was ordained as a minister at an early age and preached in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Mississippi before coming to Texas about 1839 or 1840. In 1841 he was appointed to the Nacogdoches District in the Texas Mission Conference, and there he held services in the historic Old Stone Fort in Nacogdoches. In 1845 William was sent to Henderson, where he soon organized a building committee and the first Methodist Church was established. He also organized the Church Hill Circuit, which still exists today. Reverend Craig served as pastor for many churches in East Texas, including those in Panola County, Harrison County, Tyler, Salem, and others. One important event in Craig’s life occurred in 1857 when he was appointed to serve as Chaplain to the Texas State Senate. He was also one of the earliest members of the Masonic organization in the state. Many famous people called Reverend Craig “friend,” including: Littleton Fowler, Oran M. Roberts, Martin Ruter, Orceneth Fisher, and others. One very good friend, Charles Chevallier, a Nacogdoches merchant, gave him (for a few dollars) a 320-acre farm in Rusk County near Oakland, where he lived and died and where his descendants have homes today.
