Hazelwood Buckner "Wood"1 Farish, born 1812 in Mississippi Territory--presently  Sumter Co., Alabama; died 13 Jan 1867 in Nellie, Wilcox Co., Alabama; buried in the Reaves-Farish-Mallard Cemetery in Wilcox County. He was the son of Robert Steven Farish and Elizabeth P Grissell. He married abt 1835 in Wilcox Co. to Ellen Elizabeth Williams, born 22 Aug 1817 in Georgia; died 1 Jan 1904 in Winston Co., Mississippi; buried in Noxapater Methodist Cemetery, Winston Co., Mississippi. She was the daughter of Wiley Williams and Zelpha (maiden name not known).

The exact year that Hazelwood Buckner Farish moved to Wilcox County is not known, but it was sometime prior to 1835 when he married Ellen Elizabeth Williams in Wilcox County. He was a well known Methodist minister and physician practicing in Wilcox County from the 1840s until his death in 1867. In the C.S.A. Pension Application (Alabama Pension #22873 & 7394) filed by his daughter Caroline Virginia "Jennie" (Farish) Finklea, she provided the name of her father and mother and confirmed the occupation of her father as a Methodist Minister and physician.

Thirteen children were born to Hazelwood Buckner Farish and Ellen Elizabeth Williams, all of which were born in Wilcox County.

COMMENT: William DeKalb Rayburn was b. in Wilcox County, Alabama about 15 mi. n. of Scotland, Alabama. It appears that there may have been some confusion about Scotland being his place of birth. It is believe that he may have made reference to living at one time near Scotland, Monroe, Co., Alabama. Some of the family that knew William DeKalb have suggested that if that was what they wanted to believe, that he would have let them believe it. EDR

LIFE: Verbal from Clarence E. Rayburn, son of William DeKalb Rayburn - William DeKalb Rayburn told Clarence that he came to Texas twice. Once when he was about 18 and then again in 1894 when he brought his family to Texas to stay. When Clarence asked his father why he came to Texas the first time he told him that he came because he could get work and make good money for that day. He stated that he came to work for the Slaughter's which were in the cattle business. They were hiring help for cattle roundups and cattle drives. He is thought to have worked for about eighteen months. When Clarence asked him why he did not stay, he told him that he got homesick and went back to Alabama.
The newspaper "Fort Worth Star Telegram" dated March 1, 1998 Sec E Page 5, reprinted an article that was written about an interview with Mr. Acey Brown, who stated he was 78 years old at that time, and told of working for the Slaughter outfit at about the same time (1879-1881) that W. D. Rayburn worked for them. Extract of that information follows as an item of interest in the life of W. D. Rayburn. The original article is referenced - Library of Congress, WPA Writers Project, from interview with Thomas Acey Brown, Tennyson, Texas, Feb 1. 1938:
"I was about 17 years old when I left Rusk County, looking for a ranch job. I meandered over into the Palo Pinto and Ranger section, where I worked for the old Slaughter outfit. Everybody knowed that Slaughter bunch all over the states. The old man was a Baptist preacher, C. C. Slaughter was a banker in Dallas and was worth over three million. Lum, another son, was the black sheep, did a little gambling and everything else that came his way. Bill and John were ranchmen, on a large scale. The whole outfit owned a great part of Texas. They just kept right on, right on growing up with Texas. That's why they were so famous. I worked with that outfit for several years during round-up-times...."

While Henry Rayburn, son of W. D. Rayburn, was plowing with a cultivator in his father's field, a swarm of bees settled on the cultivator and so persisted in staying that the young man had to take out the mules and turn the implement over to the bees. Mr. Rayburn got the bees hived in about four hours and still has them.
