I have made a quick search to see what family history details I could locate on Salatheal Scarborough Brittingham, aka S. S. Brittingham. The purpose of this article to to list details found during this cursory review, and also provide some comments for consideration.

1. SOURCE: Clarke County, Alabama and Its Surroundings, 1540-1877; Pg 222 –
List of principal house holders at Grove Hill in 1850 and probable date of beginning of their residence –
List of names include: S. S. Brittingham - 1836
Comment: This indicates S. S. Brittingham moved to Grove Hill, Clarke Co. Alabama about 1836.

2. MARRIAGE: Marriage Records, Clarke Co., Alabama –
Scarbrough Brittingham married Ruth Pugh, 9 August 1836 in Clarke Co.

Comments: Middle name of S. S. Brittingham apparently was Scarbrough.
This marriage record also confirms that he was in Clarke Co. as early as 1836.

3. CENSUS: 1850 Clarke Co., Alabama; Twp not stated; 21 Oct 1850; Pg 239A;
(Ancestry.com image 69 of 118); Dwlg 505 – Fam 505 –
S. S. Brittenham 41 M Mechanic 200 Unknown
Ruth 35 F Alabama
Francis 11 M Alabama
Sarah 8 F Alabama
Mary 6 F Alabama
Nathan 4 M Alabama
Comments: Spouse of S. S. Brittingham on this census report no doubt is Ruth Pugh who he married in 1836. At time of the 1850 Census, they had 4 children named.

4. MARRIAGE: Marriage Records, Clarke Co., Alabama –
S. S. Brittingham married Rebecca Furgerson on 9 Jan 1857 in Clarke Co.

Comments: It appears that wife #1 Ruth Pugh had died or was divorced prior to Jan 1857.
Marriage to Rebecca Furgerson apparently is 2nd marriage for S. S. Brittingham.

5. CENSUS: 1860 Clarke Co., Alabama; Twp not stated; P. O. Grove Hill; 1 June 1860; Pg 639A; (Ancestry.com image 87 of 195); Dwlg 769- fam 853 –
Salathia S. Brittenham 51 M Farmer 800 1325 Maryland
Mary A. 16 F Clarke Co. [Alabama]

Comments: At time of census in June of 1860; it appears that 2nd wife Rebecca Furgerson had died between 1857 & 1860. Daughter Mary A. Brittingham [on 1850 Census age 6] was shown as “Domestic” and obviously was keeping house for the household at that time [1869]. What happened to other children named on the 1850 Census is not clear at this time.

6. MARRIAGE: Marriage Records, Clarke Co., Alabama –
S. S. Brittingham married Miss Elizabeth R. Fergerson on 13 Nov 1860, in Clarke Co.

Comments: S. S. Brittingham married the 3rd time in November 1860. It appears that Rebecca Furgerson may have died prior to Nov 1860. It also appears that Rebecca and Elizabeth R. Fergerson may have been sisters, but not proven. A check of the Fergerson family on 1850 Census might answer that question.

Elizabeth Fergerson is shown in the hh of her parents at time (June 1860) of the 1860 Census:

CENSUS: 1860 Clarke Co., Alabama; Grove Hill; 1 June 1860; Pg 611 A; Dwlg 510 - Fam 596 -
William Ferguson 50 M Farmer 50 285 Georgia
Elizabeth 42 F Georgia
James 13 M Georgia
Elizabeth 16 F Domestic Georgia
Sarah 11 F Georgia
Mark 19 M Farming Georgia
Mary A 6 F Lowndes Co.

7. DEATH - The death date of Salatheal Scarbrough Brittingham has not been confirmed by me. However, an e-mail from Elaine Crosby to Bobbye Winston indicated he died in Atlanta during the Civil War. I wonder if Elaine Crosby has a copy of his military record that would confirm the date. And also, does Elaine know whether his widow collected a pension for his service. Those records might expand the details.
There is a web site (located by Bobbye Winston) that indicates he died 24 Jun 1864 in Atlanta. But the date is not documented. Plus the fact that this same web site indicates that S. S. Brittingham was b. 1833 which does not fit well with census reports I found.

CONFLICT: The Brittingham Family from 1830-1976 by Euphemia R. Taylor, dated Nov. 1976, indicates Isaac Brittingham [who died in Wilcox Co. AL and left a will] had a son John J. Brittingham son who “…. left the Gravel Creek area [Wilcox Co.] and moved to Lower Peach Tree and Choctaw Point and married Elizabeth Furgerson and they had one son named William and they have settled in Owassa, Alabama. This information regarding John Brittingham was furnished by his grandson, William Brittingham [then age 79] and lived in Owassa, Alabama …”

Euphemia R. Taylor is a descendant of Isaac Monroe Brittingham, son of Isaac.

Now it appears from the above referenced sources, that a man named Salatheal Scarbrough Brittingham lived in Clarke Co., at the same time and married the same Elizabeth Furgerson/Fergerson.

CONCLUSION: From the limited records located at this time, it appears that the persons John J. Brittingham and Salatheal Scarbrough Brittingham who lived in Clarke Co., Alabama and married Elizabeth Fergerson may be the same. The question remains as to why the grandson William would have stated that his grandfather was named John J. Brittingham and some records indicate his name was Salatheal Scarbrough Brittingham. It is not clear whether the grandson just provided a name in error, or if he in fact had a nickname and/or alias name.

From the above records, it appears that –
Name: Salatheal Scarbrough Brittingham
Birth: 1809 Place not certain. One census indicates unknown. Another indicates Maryland. But this brings up another question. If he was born in 1809 as indicated on the 1850 and 1860 Census, then he would have been too old to serve in the military during the Civil War under ordinary circumstances. The possibility that a man age over 50 being accepted into a military unit at that time seems unlikely.

Plus, in considering whether this S. S. Brittingham was a son of Isaac who died in Wilcox Co.; it is noted that a son born in the time frame of 1809 is not shown in the hh of Isaac Brittingham at time of the 1830 Census. However, it is possible that he may have been the son of Isaac and left home prior to the 1830 Census.
