MOSES ALLEN GATLIN, was born February 4, 1782 in North Carolina. His
date of death and place of birth are unknown. He married first Avy (Amy?) Rose (Rowe? Rhodes?) on May 14, 1799 in Warren County, Georgia. His second marriage was to Chloe Ros (Rowe? Rhodes?) on April 16, 1803 in Warren County. Lived in Butler/Crenshaw Counties, AL. Proof of Moses' parentage has not been established; however, Eva Loa McDuffie in The Gatlin Family of America (pg. 14) states:Edward Gatlin stated that he wrote the names in the Bible more than
thirty years ago, and that his brother James wrote the date of his
mother's more than thirty years ago. His mother,
Elizabeth Bradley born 8 December 1759
Moses Allen born 4 February 1782
Jesse Gatlin died 4 February 1782It is inferred from the above statement that Moses and Jesse were twins, and if, in fact, Elizabeth Bradley were the mother of Moses Allen Gatlin, his father would have been JESSE GATLIN, who was born about 1794 in Chowan River Region, NC, and died May 6, 1837 in Randolph County, NC. This particular Jesse Gatlin fought in the Revolutionary War and was at the Battle of Guilford.
Moses Gatlin fought in the War of 1812, from September 26, 1814 to March
2, 1815, in Co. 3, Few's Regiment, Georgia Militia, for which he received $45.04.According to Alfred Kitchen, researcher, Moses "Gatling" was listed as a witness to probation of a will for John Parish--will made August 23, 1819--probated May 5, 1823. Names listed in the will: John Parish, wife Elizabeth, sons Hampton, William, Allen, Anslem; Daughters Lynney Cooper, Sally Rowe, Polly James, Dicey Smith, Elizabeth Parrish, Patsy Parrish; Grandaughters Elizabeth Cooper, Lucinda Rowe (dau of Sally Rowe).
Nothing is known of Moses' first wife, Amy Rose (Rowe) other than the Warren County marriage information; although it is believed that she was related to Chloe Rowe, the second wife. It is assumed that Amy was the mother of Jeptha Gatlin.
By 1830, Moses and Chloe were living in Butler County, Alabama (Section
2, Township 10, Range 16, now in Crenshaw County). This land is located just west of the intersection of County Road 68 and County Road 11, north of Honoraville (source: Drmos@alaweb.com). In the 1850's Moses applied for and received two allotments of Bounty Land (80 acres each). It is not known where this land was located. By the time of the 1860 census, both Moses and Chloe were living in the household of Jeptha Gatlin in Covington County (Williams Mill). Moses' was listed as an invalid and gives his age as 87.At this time, there are only two known children of Moses Allen Gatlin; although, the family believes there were others. These children were: Jeptha Gatlin and Eliza Gatlin.
Jeptha Gatlin was born in 1803 in Georgia. He married Mary Ann Donaldson on August 28, 1829 in Montgomery County. He might have been called "Jerry." In 1850, he lived in Lowndes County, Rocky Mnt. Dist, where he listed his occupation as a miller. By 1860, he was a farmer in Covington County.
His children were:
(1) George W. Gatlin (abt. 1831);
(2) Joseph Daniel Gatlin (2/23/1833-11/7/1898) who married Liddy Murphy;
(3) James Gatlin (abt. 1836);
(4) Jesse Bernard Gatlin (4/7/1838-5/16/1921) who married Louisa Olivia Walker; (5) Harmon Sion Gatlin (6/21/1839-1928), who married first Martha Ann Henderson and, second, Matilda Jane Dauphin;
(6) Sion A. Gatlin (1842-1863), who died in the Civil War.
(7) Hillard Gatlin, another possible child, but there is no proof.Eliza Gatlin (1825) married Francis Glass, a widower, on 12/31/1857 in Butler County. They had one son, Robert W. H. Glass, born 1859. According to Charles Glass, a descendant, "Eliza and Francis moved from Alabama to Alexandria, Rapides Parish, LA and were counted there in the 1860 census, along with their son William. The 1870 census showed the family in Livingston, TX, living with Benjamin Glass, Francis' son by Sarah Varner Glass. The 1880 census shows only Eliza Glass and son, "John", age 20, living in Livingston, Polk County, TX."

OSCAR A. GATLIN, married Lucy Williams on June 1, 1912. Oscar graduated from the University of Maryland in 1915, and practiced medicine in NC. Oscar left the family in the 1920's. Supposedly, Oscar's father was A. Gatlin from Vanceboro, NC. However, Oscar does not show up on the 1900 Census, nor the 1910 NC Census. It would be nice to know exactly where Oscar began and ended in this life.
