KIRKHAM - GASKINS

Robert McRae Kirkham and his wife, Mary Alice Gaskins (whose mother was Margaret Debaun Gaskins) made Sullivan their home during the main part of their lives. He was justice of the peace during most of that time. They had four sons, Clement Seburn, William, Arba, and Charles, and one daughter, Margaret Kirkham Branson. Clem married Maud Ethel Martin. Their three children were: Frances (who married Robert L. Clark of Indianapolis), Maxine (deceased at the age of three) and Edna.

Maud died in 1913 and Edna was reared by her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Martin. Robert also died in 1913 and Clem moved his mother and daughter, Frances, to Farmersburg. Mary Alice died Oct. 5, 1921.

Clem married Abigail Ray Parsons, whose parents were John O. Ray and Laura Wallace of Wheatland, IN. They continued to live in Farmersburg for a few years and were members of the Church of Christ.

Before his marriage, Clem served in the Spanish-American War, and after returning he was a shoe salesman for Julius Hatry.

He and Abby moved to Sullivan in the early 40s. Soon after moving, they lost a son at childbirth. On July 14, 1922, their daughter, Alice Ann, was born. After graduation, she earned a teaching degree and moved to Plano, IL, where she met and married Melvin Hansen. They were the parents of two daughters, Elizabeth and Christina, and grandparents of two.

After her husband's death, she married Bond Beasley, a native of Sullivan. This marriage ended with his death on April 24, 1990.
