VA - Augusta County Musters
THE PRESTON PAPERS. The two lists following, viz: "Copies of the Musters of Augusta County" and "A Register of the Persons who have been either killed, wounded or taken prisoner by the Enemy in Augusta County, as also of such as have made their Escape," are among The Preston Papers held by The State Historical Society of Wisconsin, and are published with the permission of that Society. It is believed that they have not been published before. The date of the Musters has been fixed by Mr. Joseph A. Waddell, the author of that most delightful, exhaustive and valuable work, "The Annals of Augusta County," as the year 1742.

This database indexes the names of Illinois Mexican War veterans appearing in the ninth volume of the publication, Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois (1902). In 1881 U. S. War Department clerks transcribed the Illinois rosters from their records and sent copies to the Adjutant General for publication. The 1882 Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois first included Mexican War veterans. The names of approximately 6,500 men, organized into the First through the Fourth Regiments and four independent companies, are found in the 1882 report and the 1902 republication. As the Fifth and Sixth Regiments did not see active service, the publications do not include rosters for these units.

    Illinois Civil War Veterans
This database of Illinois Civil War Veterans indexes the first eight volumes of the nine volume publication, Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois. (The ninth volume lists veterans of Black Hawk, Mexican, and Spanish-American Wars.) This 1900-1901 publication, originating from the rosters maintained during the Civil War by the Illinois Adjutant General, is the result of an 1899 Illinois statute mandating that a corrected version of these records and subsequent publications be printed. The names of approximately 250,000 men, organized into 175 regiments, are found in its pages. The work includes a roster and history for each regiment

    56th Illinois Infantry Regiment History

    Adjutant General's Report

This Regiment was organized with companies principally enlisted from the counties of Massac, Pope, Gallatin, Saline, White, Hamilton, Franklin and Wayne
Immediately after the Regiment was mustered into United States service at Camp Mather near Shawneetown, Illinois, General Grant ordered it to Paducah, Kentucky, where it constituted a part of the garrison of that place.

When General Halleck moved upon Corinth, Mississippi, this Regiment like many others went up the Tennessee River on steamboats, and from Hamburg Landing marched out to join in the siege of Corinth. The Regiment was assigned to the Division commanded by General Schuyler Hamilton, and to a Brigade composed of the Fifth, Tenth and Seventeenth Iowa, Fifty-sixth Illinois, Tenth Missouri and Eightieth Ohio Regiments, and commanded by Colonel Pursell, of Iowa. The Regiment participated in the pursuit of Beauregard's army after he abandoned Corinth.

When Halleck's army was scattered to various Departments this Division remained with General Grant, who was placed in command of the District.
During the summer of 1862 the principal camp for the army occupying northern Mississippi was in the hills of Clear Creek near Corinth, from which place a number of long and exhaustive marches were made to Holly Springs and other points in the heat and dust of an exceedingly hot, dry summer.
In May, during the siege of Corinth, Colonel Kirkham obtained a leave of absence and resigned his commission, the command devolving upon Lieutenant Colonel Brown, who in turn during the summer resigned, and the command devolved upon Lieutenant Colonel Raum, who had been promoted.

    MS - 2nd CAV RGT

Robert I. Kirkham & Roxanna Venable Kirkham started the move toward Mississippi after the 1850 census and were in Mississippi when the Civil War started. Their son, Robert Jemison , born 12/22/1844, in Georgia, joined the confederate cause in Mississippi in April 1861 when he enlisted in Armstrong's Brigade Company A of the 2nd Mississippi Calvary and served there until the War's end when he was discharged at Columbus,Mississippi.. He had a friend, William S. Allison, also in Company A of the 2nd Mississippi Calvary. Robert Jemison Kirkham married the sister of this friend, Mary Caroline Allison. He also served with James Moss and Dave Adams of Ackerman,Miss. Second Mississippi Cavalry Regiment. (I have the pension application documents for Robert J. Kirkham. It took me years to get it because it was erroneously filed under Kirkman.)
