Although many people are aware that February is Black History Month, perhaps fewer people realize that November is designated as Native American Indian Heritage Month. Genealogical data about Native American Indian ancestors can often be difficult to find. However, family researchers may be able to obtain some information from overlooked or unexpected sources.

Since schools were set up for Indian students, mention of Native American Indians as well as whites may appear in government records. The selected information below comes from the ANNUAL REPORT OF THE COMMISSIONER OF INDIAN AFFAIRS, 1894 (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1895).

On pages 514-515 are the names of people who worked for the Indian School Service. The following individuals were employed at the Albuquerque School in Albuquerque, NM, on 30 June 1894. The list provides the person's name, position, salary, sex, "color" (sic) (White or Indian), and date of "present" appointment.
