If you are trying to locate forebears in the Celtic country of Erie, you will welcome the new third edition of TRACING YOUR IRISH ANCESTORS by John Grenham. First published fourteen years ago, the updated publication reflects the major changes that have taken place in Irish research, such as genealogy becoming a respected and popular study in Ireland and the spread of the use of the internet.

Combining the best features of a textbook and a reference work, Grenham's volume describes the methodology of the genealogical research process and provides a wealth of data about source materials, where to find them, and how to use them. Nearly a third of the book is comprised of an exhaustive county-by-county inventory of various genealogical resources (including internet websites) and a year-by-year roster of census returns and substitutes. A list of copies (including microfilmed and database transcript) of Roman Catholic parish records of baptisms, marriages, and burials makes up another large section. To help genealogists make better use of the registers, the author supplies a guide to variant parish names and new revised parish maps.

Grenham's updates and revisions demonstrate the recent steps forward in Irish genealogy that have made previously scattered and remote resources more accessible to family historians. Perhaps the best manual now available concerning genealogical research in the Emerald Isle, the third edition of  TRACING YOUR IRISH ANCESTORS is a valuable addition to the field of "how-to" guides.

The 526-page paperback has a preface, an introduction (which briefly summarizes American, Australian, and British resources for locating the Irish place of origin), a list of abbreviations, and illustrations. To the book's price of $24.95, buyers should add the cost for postage and handling charges. (For U.S. postal mail, the cost is $4 for one book and $2.00 for each additional copy; for UPS, the cost is $6 for one copy and $2.50 for each additional book). The volume (item order #2385) may be purchased by check, MasterCard, or Visa from Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 3600 Clipper Mill Rd., Suite 260, Baltimore, Maryland 21211 (for phone orders, call toll free 1-800-296-6687; fax 1-410-752-8492; website www.genealogical.com).

With the establishment of the Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock, TX, more people are becoming aware of the interesting legacy of glider pilots during World War II. Since many participants in the war are already gone or soon will be, it is more important than ever to remember them and the valuable service they performed. The "In Memoriam" page of the Spring 2006 (Vol. 4, No. 4) issue of the Silent Wings Museum Newsletter lists sixteen former pilots, instructors, and mechanics or their widows who passed away within the past few months. Anyone who has information about deaths of members of this military group or their spouses may want to send it to the museum at 6202 N. 1-27, Lubbock, TX 79403 - 9710.

Charles N. Ferguson, 811 South Market, Shawnee, OK 74801 is seeking information about and would like to get in touch with descendants of John H. and Fanny FERGUSON. They lived in Palestine, Anderson Co., TX, during the years 1910 - 1920. Their children were Verna, Roy R., Jayne B., Cibia (female), and Earl C. FERGUSON. All were born in Texas.

On July 29, 2006, the North Carolina Genealogical Society and the Forsyth County Genealogical Society will present the Western Regional Summer Workshop at the Advent Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, NC.
