With the increasing use of technology, people are receiving much of their mail over the internet. As many persons use less and less "snail mail," it is easy to forget that many services we take for granted have not always been available. Rural free delivery, for example, did not exist before 1896. People had to go to the post office to get their mail. As a result, newspapers use to print lists of letters waiting to be picked up.

Genealogists should realize the value of these lists because they name individuals who resided in or near a specific area at a specific time. The lists may also be useful for locating persons as they moved from place to place between censuses.

Such a list may be found in the Chenango County paper, the Norwich Journal, Norwich, NY, 8 April 1847 (New Series, Vol. IX, no. 51), p. 3, c. 6. Because the print is faded in a few places, some letters or names are questionable.
