     Here are some selected items found in a 1908 clipping from the Dallas Semi-Weekly Farm News, published in Dallas, Texas. Although the exact date of the issue is not shown, the dates of the entries indicate it was printed in early August. (Editor’s note: Some punctuation has been added for clarity and surnames have been capitalized for emphasis.)

     Comanche, TX – Aug. 6 – “Elby BARNES, 18 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. BARNES of this place, was drowned this morning at Jones Crossing, in the Colorado River. If the body is recovered, it will be brought here for interment. His brother, Albert, left overland this morning to assist in searching for the body.”

     Denton, TX – Aug. 7 – “Jacob COLE, an old and well-known resident of the Krum community, was found unconscious in his back yard last night and died a short while afterward. Heart failure was the cause of death. Mr. Cole was 78 years old.”

     Belton, TX – Aug. 7 – “Two white prisoners escaped from jail at 7 o’clock this morning by running over Mr. COWAN, who went up to feed....One was recaptured.”

     Fort Worth, TX – Aug. 7 – “Mrs. Ella DAVIS, wife of former Mayor W. D. DAVIS of North Fort Worth, died at 2:30 o’clock this morning at Dr. THOMPSON’s Sanitarium after an illness of several months. A dangerous operation was performed Thursday morning and the end came twenty-four hours later.”

     Sherman, TX – Aug. 8 – “James KIRK, a young farmer, went between two cars of a Houston and Texas Central train at Howe, and was painfully crushed about the hips. He was brought to the hospital at Sherman.”

     Denton, TX – Aug. 8 – “Mrs. Henry LOWE and Miss LOWE were badly bruised in a runaway west of the city yesterday afternoon, Miss Lowe escaping with only severe bruises, while her mother was knocked unconscious, and concussion of the brain is feared.”

     Crawford, McLennan Co., TX – Aug. 9 – “Yesterday evening about 5 o’clock W. T. MILLER’s little 3-year-old boy fell in Tank Creek, which runs near the house, and was drowned before they discovered his absence from the house.”

     Austin, TX – Aug. 8 – “Frederich A. MUELLER, an aged German, was run over by a street car here today, resulting in a broken left leg, bruises and injuries on the head and body. Mueller is 70 years old and his condition is consequently considered precarious.”

     Gainesville, TX – Aug. 8 – “The 4-year-old daughter of Dick SCOTT, “colored” (sic), died last night as the result of drinking carbolic acid. The child found the bottle in a closet and drank its contents. Death came three hours later.”

     Austin, TX – Aug. 7 – “Believed to have been bitten by a dog having rabies, Chester SHERMAN, the 5-year-old son of Sam SHERMAN of this city, was today sent to the Pasteur Institute for treatment.”

     Bay City, TX – Aug. 8 – “Dr. B. SMITH, an old citizen of this part of the State (sic), is heir to something like $300,000,000. This land was leased 100 years ago and the lease has just run out. The property is now held by Trinity Church Corporation, New York City. The son of Dr. Smith expects the return of his father, Monday, from Mobile.”
