David R. and Sarah (Rector) in North Carolina and Tennessee

David R. Kinnick was born about 1780 in Charles County, Maryland. At about age 12, he moved with his family to the Yadkin River valley in what was then Rowan Co, North Carolina.

On 7 Sep 1802, Israel Whitaker sold to David R. Kinnick (at age 22) 100 acres on the west side of Dutchman Creek. [We drove over Dutchman Creek a couple miles from this property when we visited the are in the summer of 2000.] David purchased an additional 100 acres on the west bank of Dutchman Creek from Allen C. Harbin on 27 Feb 1804.

David married Sarah Rector on 1 May 1804, at age 24, being the owner of 200 acres of land. Three children were soon their lives, daughters Elizabeth, born 28 Mar 1805, and Nancy, born 4 Dec 1806, and son Quincy, born 9 Apr 1808. Quincy died in 1811. I do not know what became of Elizabeth and Nancy.

John was born to David and Sarah in 1809 and George in 1812. Three girls followed while they still lived in North Carolina: Joanne, born 29 Apr 1814; Youry, born 29 Jun 1816; and, Susan (known as Patty), born 10 May 1819.

By the time of the 1820 federal census, the family lived in eastern Tennessee, in Washington County. In 1820, David would have been 40, Sarah was probably about the same. John was 11, George was 8, Joanne was 6, Youry, 4, and Patty, 1.

Two more daughters and a son were born to the family in Tennessee. Martha was born in 1822 and Mary (known as Polly) was born in 1823. Murry Riley (he went by Riley) was born on 22 Jan 1834.

John married Mary Sheffield in about 1836; they had 8 children. George married Catherine Parker on 17 Oct 1837; they had 6 children. Youry never married, lived until 31 Aug 1894, and died in Hamblen Co, TN, at age 78.

Polly married Robert Culbert on 20 Feb 1847; they had 7 children. Riley married Sarah Boreing on 17 Dec 1859; they had 5 children. Martha married William C. Crutcher on 23 Jul 1861; they had ? children.

The 1850 census for Washington Co, TN, has David R. Kinnick, 70, MD, Farmer, with wife, Sarah, 69, and four children, Susan, 32, TN (places the family in TN in 1818), Mary, 30, TN, Martha, 28, TN, Riley, 16, TN.
