Asbury was the 5th child of Thomas and Nancy (Simmons) Brogdon. His mother died when he was a child. There were 5 brothers, 1 half-brother, and 4 half-sisters. When 19 years old, he worked his way through what is known as the Carolina neighborhood and made his home with a Mr. McLelland for several years. The remaining years of his life were spent near Greenwood except one season in Tipton County.
