Francis Van Aken married Mary Ann Campbell on 8 Oct 1844.

One son, A.O., married a Simmons (who married a Kinnick), and another son, Hiram, married a Schwyhart, a niece of Susan (who married a Kinnick).

The Van Akens, the Simmons, the Kinnicks, the Schwyharts, as well as the Edicks lived nearby one another, over time, in both Illinois and in Iowa.

Francis was born 23 jan 1824, in Onondaga Co, New York. He died 25 Jan 1904, in Ft. Madison, Iowa.

Mary Ann was born 15 Apr 1823, in Pike, Allegany Co, Pennsylvania. She died on 3 Jan 1901, in Scranton, Greene Co, Iowa. They had come to Iowa from Illinois in 1869, settling in Gurthrie Center, where they remained until the fall of 1875, when they again moved to Scranton, Greene Co, Iowa. They remained there until her death in 1901. He had returned to New York to visit friends, but became ill, and returned to live with his son, Alfred, in Fort Madison, Iowa, prior to his death in 1904.

Francis Van Aken was a soldier in the Civil War, enlisting in Company A, 141st Illinois Volunteer Infantry.

Children of Francis and Mary:

1. Alfred O. Van Aken married Rachel Ann Simmons

2. Olive Liverna Van Aken (b. 1848, NY)

3. Polly Lucretia Van Aken (b. 1850, NY)

4. Hiram Adelbert Van Aken married Susan Schwyhart

5. Sylvester C. Van Aken (1855-1879) married Hannah Dillinger. He was born in Illinois.*

6. Nelson Darwin Van Aken (1858-1942) married Ollie Goodyear on 31 Dec 1889, in Scranton, Greene Co, Iowa.

7. Florence J. Van Aken (1860-1885). She died in Scranton, Greene Co, Iowa.

8. Julie A. Van Aken (1867-??) married William Lloyd Goodyear

* Sylvester is listed as born in Illinois, appearing to indicate when his parents moved from New York. However, Nelson's records say he was born in Plato, Kane Co, New York. Then, Florence is shown as born in Illinois. Did they go back? Is one of these in error? Good questions to research...
