Mamie GarnerMamie Garner

Written by her daughter Ruth Garner Blair

Her father was a cowpoke
Till her mother calmed him down.
She was one of five children
Born in a small east Texas town.

Her beginnings were quite humble;
Their luxuries were few;
But they had a love within their hearts
That always remained true.

She married a small town minister;
She labored by his side.
She became the type of minister's wife
People pointed to with pride.

Together they rode the circuit
In a buggy, then a Model T.
The Methodist minister and his wife
They were doing God's work, you see.

With her small children beside her
She visited the sick and the sad;
Always sharing with other people
The joy of life she had.

It's not easy being a minister's wife:
Like a fishbown is your home;
But the grace and charm of Mamie
Made it seem that she sat on a throne.

Her children now are older,
The minister long since passed away.
Her grandchildren and their little ones,
They heard what she had to say.

"The Lord always looks after you
For he promised to care for his own.
If you serve Him with all of your heart and soul
Then someday He'll carry you home."

Now Mamie has gone to heaven;
In the arms of God she'll rest.
We know now she is happy
And having known her, our lives are blest.
