King Family Bible
History of the King Family Bible
According to family tradition, the King family Bible
was purchased in Virginia around 1776 by a man who was the father or grandfather
of John King. Since he could not read well, he asked his son to read
the Bible to him. Reading portions to his father regularly, the son
eventually read the Bible completely through and as a reward, received it
as his own. He passed it on to his son, and in due time it was handed
down to James Marion "Jim" King.
It is said that in 1905, when Jim King died, some of
his relatives came to his funeral and took the family Bible home with them.
At the top of a page near the front of the Bible there is a note, written
in pencil, which reads, "Uncle Andia took this book April 27, 1911."
Homer Clifton King recalled that in 1936 his father,
Jim and Lou's son Mack Clifton King, made a trip from his home in Commerce
TX to visit relatives somewhere in west Texas. When he returned home,
he had his father's Bible with him.
At Mack's death the Bible passed to his son Clifton.
Since Clifton had a daughter but no sons, and wanted to leave the Bible to
a family member with the King name, he gave the Bible to Harold King , son
of Sterling Guy King, on July 9, 1978.
Harold had planned to leave the Bible to his son David,
since David had a young son to carry on the family name. But the son,
eleven-year-old Robbie, died of cancer in December of 1983. Harold
died in July of the following year. After consideration, David decided
to accept the Bible in accordance with this father's wishes even though he
no longer had a son in his family line.
At the present time--May 1997--the Bible is still in
David's keeping. David has directed that the Bible is to pass from
him to his nephew Brian King. Slated to be a future steward of the
King family Bible is Brian's son, Jared Taylor King, born 30 Jan 1996.
