An 18-year-old Jenks HIgh School student died at a hospital Thursday from injuries he sustained in a single-vehicle crash in Tulsa.

Tyler Moody was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital, where he died after a crach about 3 p.m. in the 12100 block of South Delaware Avenue, Tulsa Police Sgt. Wayne Allen said.

Moody, the son of Tulsans Kevin and Veronica Moody, was driving a 1995 two-door Ford Explorer Sport.

Kevin Moody is vice president of Moody's Jewelers.

Tyler Moody and his 18-year-old passenger were both wearing seat belts, police said.

In re-creating the scene, investigators learned that Moody was driving south "at a fairly high rate of speed," Allen said. "He took the curve at 121st and proceeded eastbound about 180 feet east of the curve at 121st Street. He approached another eastbound vehicle and attempted to pass that vehicle."

As he was attempting to pass, he saw an approaching westbound car, reports show.

As Moody tried to get back into his lane, he overcorrected, and his sport utility vehicle left the roadway, Allen said.

The SUV flipped twice, landing upside down. Neither occupant was ejected. The passenger was injured but was up and walking around when rescue workers arrived, Allen said.

Police were continuing to investigate the crash Friday afternoon.

Moody was a senior at Jenks High School, where he excelled in both athletics and academics. He was a National Merit Scholar finalist, a Distinguished Graduate and an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction.

He also was French Club president, Jenks' Chemistry Olympiad representative, Adventure Club Leader and a letterman in both varsity cross country and track.

Besides his achievements in school, Moody was an American Red Cross "Local Hero" award winner. He also won the Boy Scouts of America's highest award for lifesaving. He won both of these awards for a late-night rescue of a rock climber in 1998, when he was 14. He later became an Eagle Scout.

He enjoyed mountain biking, rock climbing, backpacking, ice climbing and snowboarding.

In addition to his parents, Moody is survived by a sister, Michelle Moody; and his grandparents, Mildred Moody and Henry and Stephanie Tomczyk.

A funeral service is set for 10 a.m. Monday at the Asbury United Methodist Church. Visitation is scheduled for 2 - 5 p.m. Sunday at Ninde Woodland Funeral Home.

Friends are making memorial contributions to the Boy Scouts of America, 3206 S. Peoria Ave., Tulsa, OK 74105.
