SUSPECT IS SHOT WITH OWN GUN IN STORE HOLDUP

A man who attempted to rob an east Tulsa rent-to-own store at gunpoint was shot with his own weapon in a struggle with store employees Saturday morning, police said.

Eddie Griffith, 29, of Jenks walked into the Aaron's Rental Purchase store at 14203 E. 21st Street., showed two store imployees a small-caliber revolver he was holding and demanded the money in the store safe, Capt. Julie Harris said.

"When he was shown that the safe did not have any money in it, he ordered the two employees into the back room," Harris said.

Once the employees went into the back room, there was a struggle in which the employees were able to wrestle Griffith's gun away from him, Harris said.

One of the employees shot Griffith in the head once with the gun, she said.

Griffith was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said.

An Aaron's Rental Purchase employee said the store's corporate office has requested that the employees not talk about the incident or release the names of the employees involved.

"All they're allowing us to do is tell people we had a robbery today," he said.

Neither of the employees was injured, he said.

SUSPECT DIES FROM OWN GUN

The man Tulsa police said was shot with his own weapon during a robbery attempt Saturday died that evening at St. Francis Hospital.

Eddy Griffith, 29, of Jenks, reportedly walked into the Aaron's Rental Purchase store at 14203 E. 21st St. Saturday morning, showed two store employees a small-caliber revolver he was holding and demanded the money in the store safe, police said.

Griffith was shown that the safe did not have any money in it, police said.

He ordered the two employees into the back room, where there was a struggle in which the employees were able to wrestle Griffith's gun away from him, police said.

After the struggle, one of the employees shot Griffith in the head with the pistol, police said.

"He died later that evening from wounds he received while attempting to rob Aaron's Rental Purchase," said Tulsa Police Officer Lucky Lamons.

An Aaron's Rental Purchase employee said the store's corporate ofice has requested the employeesnot to talk about the case or release the names of the employees involved.

Police have yet to release the names of the Aaron's Rental Purchase employees involved.

Neither of the store's employees involved was injured.
