MATH BOOK
by
Richardson Clark DREWRY  1793 - 1855

*MATH BOOK - his Teachers Manual -  hand written by him in early 1800's while teaching school in the Nashville Area
*Used by him in Nashville area, Henry County and Weakley (Gibson) County until his death in 1855
* There are about 220 pages - some have been torn or cut off or written on by children
*By the mid 1820's he was teaching in Weakley (Gibson) County
*He added family notes throughout the book

In 2005, I rescued this book from going on Public Auction Block of my cousin Margie Rogers Flippin's estate. I took digital photos and made these webpages in honor of my GGG-Grandfather, Richardson Clark Drewry. I present his Math Book here for all Drewry cousins to see. It came to me recently that I did not have to have physical possession of the book so have passed it on to cousin Bill Drewry and he will pass it on to his son, Dr. Rice Drewry, etc. - I feel that along with R.C. Drewry, my Grandfather Flag Drewry and Uncle Willard Drewry are smiling.

History of the Book from cousin Wylodean. After Richardson Clark's death in 1855, it was in the possession of his son, William Nicholas Drewry. William Nicholas DREWRY died in 1860 and the book remained with his wife, Mary OVERTON DREWRY. There are at least 2 written messages in the book by their daughter, Cornelia Ann DREWRY, who died at age of 20. She is buried under the big evergreen tree at Meridian Cemetery, her Mother and Aunt planted the tree after her death. The book remained in the Overton family for many years until one of them gave the book to Margie ROGERS FLIPPIN (dau of Lula Grace DREWRY).

Notes
1. The book has no page numbers for awhile and then there are numbers but they do not match with the actual number of pages - the numbering below is my numbering.
2. The pages themselves are very sturdy, reminding me of the hand made paper at the Print Shop in Colonial Williamsburg. It must have a high cotton content. The Covers and binding, on the other hand, are falling apart, making the book very fragile.
3. The math of the day taught how to figure out needed, everyday problems. I am thinking this was Math for older male students as it has measurements for Beer, Ale and Wine. There are problems converting money to English, Canadian, etc.  There is dry measurement, land measurement, cloth measurement, Troy weight, etc.
