Flag DREWRY 1892-1967 and Pricie CAMPBELL 1894-1986 were born and raised in Weakley County like their parents and grand parents before them. Both the DREWRY and CAMPBELL families were pioneers of Weakley County, Tennesee Flag Allen DREWRY, son of James Harvey DREWRY 1893-1965 and Nannie Green BELL 1887-1948 was born on the Drewry Farm on Shades Bridge Rd. which has been in the family since 1827. His siblings were: Herman I. DREWRY 1889-1963, May Bell DREWRY SWINDELL 1894-1968, Raymond J. DREWRY 1896-1914, Lula Grace DREWRY ROGERS 1898-1965, Willard J. DREWRY 1900-1996, Elsie Ariee DREWRY PERRY 1903-1988, George Washington DREWRY 1906-1933, Wayne A. DREWRY 1908-1988. Flag was a true Southern boy who lived to hunt and fish. His sharpshooting served him well in the Army. He was proud of his many trophy sized wide mouth bass which he mounted on the walls. Flag was a tall man with great intelligence as he earned the equivalent of a college degree by taking courses studied at home and testing at the college. He loved good cars, good horse flesh, and good times. He always liked to have the newest technology, being one of the first to get a T.V. He also and an adventurous spirit. An old Greenfield gent told me he knew Flag in his younger days. ìI bet you didnít know he swam across the Mississippi River, did you?î He insisted that Flag got it into his head to swim across and did it but landed many miles down the river. Captain Drewry loved his country and was a deeply patriotic Army Officer. He enlisted before WWI and was sent to Hawaii for duty, pretty exciting for a TN farm boy in 1913. When his time was up he returned to Greenfield and went into a new car dealership but was conscripted back into the Army for WWI. After the war he was a dedicated career Army man. He was stationed in Georgia, Colorado, Texas, and California. Willie Price CAMPBELL, with her blue eyes, jet black hair, and soft peachy face got Flagís attention. She was the sister of his good friend, Jesse E. CAMPBELL who married Nannie SHARP. Both couples married June 4, 1917. While Flag and Jesse were away in WWI, Pricie had their daughter, Margurite ìMargaretî Wilson DREWRY CATRON 1918-. Four years later their son, James Hamilton DREWRY 1922-1965 was born. Everyone liked Pricie. She was an unforgettable character. Sometimes all ladylike prim and proper, sometimes a bit of a tomboy but always with a funny story to tell of her latest escapades. She was a natural nurse, loved to fuss and worry over everything. Her ultimate compliment came from Doctors at Balboa Naval Hospital. They were so impressed with her nursing of Flag they offered her a job, said she kept him alive years past his time. She loved good gossip, liked to play ìainít it awfulî, had a green thumb that could grow anything, and for 30 years, kept two desert tortoises, Lizzie and Lucy, son Jim brought her. After 20 years they started having babies which she donated to the San Diego Zoo. Flag suffered a severe injury to his leg which left him having to get around with a cane. He retired from the Army. He also suffered heavy congestion but there was no penicillin or air conditioning. It was decided the weather in San Diego might help him. They packed up and drove to California in 1935. He lived another 32 years, celebrated with Pricie their 50th wedding Anniversary. She lived on to age 92. Throughout their Army travels and after retiring to San Diego they frequently came back to visit kin folks. It was an exciting time. Lots of cooking going on. Lots of stories told. Sometimes they came by car and sometimes by train via Memphis where brothers Herman DREWRY and Willard DREWRY lived. Every day their hearts were in Weakley County. Subscribing to the local newspaper, Flag and Pricie kept up with what was going on back home. They sat in their living room chairs and talked back and forth about the Greenfield folks that were so dear to them. Submitted by Granddaughter MaryCarol |
