Notes for Armistead COATS
About 1822-3 Armistead and his siblings left Rockingham, VA
and
settled in Rutherford Co, TN. He met Nancy Brown while camped at a
place
called Jefferson Springs, which is now Murfreesboro, TN - married in
1825.
had their first children there. His brother, Peyton married Linda
Richardson there. Peyton stayed in Murfreesboro. In about 1827
Armistead,
Charles, and Sallie, along with several other families loaded wagons
and
started west settled in Gibson Co., TN - the Coats family does not fit
the time period of the other families who joined wagon train headed
toward Oklahoma Territory abt 1837. Near what is now Milan,
Gibson Co., TN the wagon master's wife took
sick and died. He refused to go on so the group disbanded and bought
land
in Gibson County, TN. Sometime in the late 1850's Armistead moved over
to Weakley Co., TN. Not sure if he was on the same wagon train as
the Sharp's etc. as he shows up in Gibson Co. much earlier than the
others....Jan
Coats J. & Hollis Coats
About 1833 Armistead Coats rode a mule to Rockingham
County, North
Carolina to visit his mother. This was the year that "the star
fell".
When he returned to Tennessee she gave him a beautiful home woven
counterpane
or coverlet. It is still in possession of the Allen Sharp
family.....Nannie
Sharp Campbell from Hollis Coats.
