The Glover family of Scotland


James Glover

James Glover was born in 1787 in Lauder parish, Berwickshire, Scotland. Little is known about him except that his occupation was a housepainter and that he married Janet Speeden Marshall. It is not known when or where he or Janet died.

Robert Glover

Robert Glover is the son of James Glover and Janet Speeden Marshall. He was born in Berwickshire in 1807. He married Joan Stavert on October 5 1827 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. They had three children; Walter (1832), Jasper (1835), and Thomas (1829). Joan died on December 18, 1860. Robert them married Elizabeth Gordon Park on May 31, 1861 at the age of about 55. Robert and Elizabeth had 3 children; Robert (March 8 1862), Janet (February 26, 1864) and Thomas (July 1 1866). Robert was a dyke builder. He passed away April 4 1884.

Robert Glover

Robert Glover is the son of Robert Glover and Elizabeth Gordon Park, He was born on March 8, 1862 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. He married Helen Shannon on April 25, 1884 in Hawick. They had two children; Robert Baird Glover and Frederick Graham Glover. Robert worked in the textile industry as a hand loom weaver and a power loom tuner. He died very young at the age of 31 on November 18 1893, According to his death certificate his cause of death was cancer of the lower jaw.

Hugh Shannon

Hugh Shannon was born in 1822 in Londonderry, Ireland. He was married to Margaret Hamilton and they had 9 children; John (July 21 1841), William (1842), Alexander (1847), Margaret (1848), Martha (1854), Abigail (1855), Hugh (1856), Daniel (1858), and Mary Ann (1861). He passed away on September 10 1884 in Hawick

Margaret Hamilton

Margaret Hamilton was born in 1822 in Antrim, Ireland. She was married to Hugh Shannon and passed away on February 15 1892.

John Shannon

John Shannon is the eldest son of Hugh Shannon and Margaret Hamilton, born July 21 1841 in Hawick. He married Margaret Graham on July 5 1863. He was a wool framework knitter and an ordinance surveyor. John passed away on February 11 1828 in Hawick of heart disease at age 87.

Margaret Graham

Margaret Graham was born about 1835 in Ireland and married to John Shannon. She passed away on March 29 1875 at age 40 of heart disease.

Helen Shannon

Helen Shannon is the daughter of John Shannon and Margaret Graham. She was born September 4 1864 in Balmaghie,Kirkcudbright, Scotland. She married Robert Glover and they had two sons, Robert Baird and Frederick Graham. She passed away on August 24 1890 at age 28, her death certificate lists the cause of death as peritonitis about two weeks following the birth of Frederick.

Robert Baird Glover

Robert Baird Glover was born on October 21 1884 in Hawick, the son of Robert Glover and Helen Shannon. He had a very sad childhood losing his mother Helen at age 5, his father and his brother at age 9. He was then taken in by his uncle James Shannon, his mother's brother, but family stories suggest it was an unhappy time. He later ran away to Edinburgh where he reportedly earned a living carrying beer to the glassworkers there. By the 1901 census he is living with the James Edgar family of Edinburgh as their adopted son, working as a butcher. He met Jane Wylie in Edinburgh on the beach there. He immigrated to Canada arriving in Halifax on April 26 1903 aboard the S.S. Corinthian. He kept a correspondence with Jane Wylie, convincing her to move to Canada. They were married on March 5 1908 in North Bay Ontario. They had 7 children, 5 of which survived early childhood; Robert Wilfred Shannon born September 25 1908, Elizabeth Milner born June 14 1910 but died May 22 1911, Helen Beatrice born August 14 1911, John Baird Robertson born November 12 1914, Margaret Jean born August 15 1917, and Orville Grant born March 23 1920. Robert worked for the railroad and moved to Detroit in 1927 and moved the family in 1931. Robert became a naturalized U. S. citizen on November 16 1940. Robert passed away on February 11 1942 of heart disease and is interred in Grand Lawn Cemetery, Detroit Michigan.

James Morgan

James Morgan was the son of James Morgan and Ann Wilson of Crighton, Midlothian Scotland. He was born on July 9 1787. He married Elizabeth Henderson on July 9 1813 in Canongate and they had 6 children; William (November 26 1822), Jean (July 24 1814), James (November 3 1816), Ann (May 14 1820), Nicholas (May 24 1825) and Jessie (abt 1829). James passed away in 1860 in Leith, Midlothian.

Elizabeth Henderson

Elizabeth Henderson was born October 20 1792 in Gladsmuir, East Lothian, Scotland, the daughter of William Henderson and Jean Cornwall, married on January 17 1792, both of Gladsmuir. She married James Morgan. It is not yet known when Elizabeth passed away.

William Morgan

William Morgan is the son of James Morgan and Elizabeth Henderson. He was born on November 26 1822 in Cranston, Midlothian, Scotland. According to the 1851 census, he is living alone with his grandmother Jean Cornwall Henderson and appears to have a 6 month old son, James, living with his sister Jessie in Cranston. It is not known who James' mother is. On November 7 1856 he marries Jane Stocks and they have 6 children; William (August 29 1857), Christina (August 27 1859 - December 25 1864), David (January 7 1862), Elizabeth Henderson Morgan (September 13 1864), Edward Henderson Morgan (November 15 1866), Alexander Stocks Morgan (March 28 1869). William worked as a coal miner. He passed away on November 16 1871 from chronic bronchitis according to his death certificate.

Jane Stocks

Jane Stocks is the youngest of 9 children born to David Stocks and Christina Duncan, both of Pencaitland, East Lothian Scotland. Jane was born on September 18 1835 in Pencaitland and on November 7 1856 she married William Morgan. After William's death in 1871, she had a seventh child, Beatrice Stocks, illegitamately with no father named on the birth certificate. Jane later married David Campbell on December 31 1875 at Dalkeith parish, Edinburgh. Jane passed away on November 7 1901 due to bronchitis and cardiac failure at the age of 61.

Elizabeth Henderson Morgan

Elizabeth Henderson Morgan was the daughter of William Morgan and Jane Stocks and was born on September 13 1874 in Cranston. On January 30 1885 she married John Ross Wylie of Kirkwall, Orkney Scotland. They had one child, Jane Grant Stocks Wylie born on July 12 1885 in Leith North, Edinburgh. After the marriage John Ross Wylie, being a seaman, went out to sea and never returned. Elizabeth worked at a domestic servant and cook. On April 21 1894 Elizabeth and Joseph Milner had an illegitamate daughter, Beatrice Annie Milner. Whether or not there was ever an official marriage between Elizabeth and Joseph is not known, but they appeared as married on all official documentation afterwards. In 1899 they had another daughter. Esther Josephine Milner. About 1904 Elizabeth, Joseph, Beatrice and Esther immigrated to Cincinatti Ohio. About 1909, Joseph Milner died. At some point during the 1920's, they moved across the Ohio river to Fort Thomas Kentucky. On March 20 1926, according to her death certificate, at the age of 61 Elizabeth committed suicide by hanging and is interred at Evergreen cemetery in Fort Thomas Kentucky.

Edward Wylie

Edward Wylie was the son of William Wylie and Euphemia Finlayson of Orkney Scotland. Edward was born on March 16 1832 in Kirkwall and St. Ola Orkney. On March 5 1856 he married Isobella Ross and they had 9 children; William Walter Ross (August 6 1856), Jessie Elizabeth Ross (March 10 1858), Thomas Ross (December 25 1859), twins Frederick William and John Ross (Novemebr 9 1861), James (August 1 1864), Eliza Jane (March 1 1867), Robert Sinclair (September 22 1869), and Edward (October 1 1872). Edward was a master ropemaker and passed away in 1899.

Isobella Ross

Isobella Ross is the daughter of Hugh Ross (March 10 1783 - November 13 1892) of Walls Orkney, and Elizabeth Sinclair (abt 1796) of Caithness Scotland. Isobella was born on March 16 1832 in Kirkwall and St. Ola. Isobella passed away at age 83 on January 1 1909 in Kirkwall.

John Ross Wylie

John Ross Wylie is the son of Edward Wylie and Isobella Ross. On January 30 1885 he married Elizabeth Henderson Morgan at the home of her mother, Jane Stocks Morgan address 14 East Cornwall St, Leith. According to the marriage record , John Ross is a seaman in the Merchant svc. After the wedding he went back out to sea and appears to have never returned. There is no record of his death.

Jane Grant Stocks Wylie

Better known as Jean or Jeanie, is the daughter of John Ross Wylie and Elizabeth Henderson Morgan. she was born on July 12 1885 at 14 East Cornwall St. Leith, Edinburgh, the home of her grandmother. From the census records and family stories, it appears that she was brought up by her grandmother and step-grandfather, David Campbell. At some point she met Robert Glover. On July 11 1906 she arrived in Montreal aboard the Sicilian according to her immigration record. On March 5 1908 she married Robert Glover in North Bay Ontario. In 1931 the family moved to Detroit. Fifteen years after the death of Robert on February 11 1942, she married Adam Brownlee in 1957. Adam died on September 15 1973 after which Jane lived with her daughter Helen, eventually moving to Florida. Jean passed away at age 99 in November 1984 in Lake Worth, Florida. Grandma Jean is very fondly remembered for her baking and her singing, as she had a very beautiful voice and is still missed and very much loved by all of us lucky enough to have had her in our lives.
