These two photos are of distant KILBURN cousins: Alice Maud SIMON, née KILBURN (1885-1961) and Frances GAUNT, née HINCHCLIFFE (1875-1922), whose mother was Ruth KILBURN. They were about seventh cousins and probably never knew each other. There does seem, however, to be a distinct family resemblance, especially about the lower face. |

The photo of Alice with her grandchildren (left) was taken in 1947, and that of Frances (right) dates from early 1922, only a few months before her death. Below: Billy Jo (1966), great-granddaughter of Frances (left) and Emma Sarah (1973), great-granddaughter of Alice (right). |

Here we have a typical period photograph (1908) of one particular branch of the KILBURN family.
The photograph was taken outside Grove Road Methodist Church in Wakefield, following the marriage of William SHEARD & Florence KILBURN. What looks like a small teenaged boy to the bride's right is actually William.
The man with the round face and black moustache behind the bride is her father Allen. To Allen's right are his parents, John & Mary Jane (nee MALLINSON). John was born in Kirkheaton in 1832, whilst Mary Jane was born in Lepton in 1835. Allen was born in Dalton in 1858 & died in Wakefield in 1938.
To the bride's left is her principal Bridesmaid, her sister Mary Alice. Mary Alice was 15 when this photograph was taken and was the last known survivor of any in the picture when she died in 1991 aged 99.
Florence's mother is stood to Allen's left. She was Martha Ann (nee HOPKINSON) born Mirfield in 1859. Florence's only surviving brother, John Harry KILBURN, born Mirfield 1880, is stood between & behind his parents, Allen & Martha. Behind John Harry, in the large black hat is his wife, Sarah Ann (Sally) (nee LUMB), born Ossett 1879, sister of the LUMB's Dairy & Ice Cream firm of Sandal. John Harry was a Pork Butcher in Kirkgate.
There are many KILBURN relatives in this photograph, perhaps one or more of them was one of yours?
Here we have two different men, but very similar in appearance. Both were KILBURN, but from different branches with a common ancestor who lived nearly 200 years before either of them were born.
On the left is Allen Kilburn - seen in the family group photograph above as the bride's father. This photograph was taken towards the end of his life, he died in 1938. Allen was a bell-ringer at St. Helen's Sandal for nigh on 40 years. After his marriage in Mirfield in 1879, he and his family moved to Wakefield where he spent the rest of his life.
On the right we have George Arthur KILBURN, born nearly 20 years after Allen in 1877. He married Lucy (nee BANES) in 1895 and they lived in Dewsbury. George Arthur's brother Wilfred emigrated to Australia with his wife Mary at the beginning of the 1900's. George Arthur fought in France during WW1, his uncle Edmund had been Mayor of Dewsbury in 1891.
Is there any similarity between these two John Kilburn's, apart from the fact that they are both wearing Royal Air Force uniform?
The one on the left is a descendant of Allen whilst the one on the right is a descendant relative of George Arthur.
If you have a family portrait or a group photograph that you feel compares favourably with any of the faces on this page, or would like to submit a photograph that I can try and match up with others in the database, I would like to receive a copy.
If you can scan one approximately 250x375 pixels between 10 and 20 Kb in size, and send it in JPEG format, together with a brief description, say about 50 words or so, we can then see which other branch your branch photographs have a likeness to.
Send them to stephen_kilburn@lineone.net putting the subject as 'Likeness'
