Memo*: Bruce Donald Logan was a bright man born in the wrong era so unfortunately was not given the opportunity to follow the academic career he was very capable of fulfilling. He left school to work on the farm & for a time worked with one of the Murrays at Broomehill. When he married he was on Group 21 which he & Ruth abandoned just as Lorraine was born in 1931. They went to live with Kath & Bruce and Don worked for his 1 pound a week sustenance cutting sleepers. His mode of transport was bicycle which he rode many miles to catch the open truck to take the gang to the cutting place. They camped away for the week and returned home for Sundays. The family moved into a little cottage in Rose street Manjimup when Lorraine was about 18 months while he still cut sleepers. In 1934 he was given a permanent job on the Jardee mill - he rode there each day until finally a house became available on the mill flat - the lowest rung of the living order on the mill. End of 1936 he was given a house in the back lane (next step up) in the town site and Lloyd came home there as a baby. After Wally died Don & Ruth bought a small holding just 10 minutes out of Jardee. Don continued to work at the mill having risen to timber inspector of all the wood that left the mill. He was also chief first aid officer at the mill. He held an NCO rank in the VDC during the war. Mill personel were manpowered and ineligible to serve in the forces. In 1951 when Ellen began to lose her sight they sold up & went to manage Coogee Home. Lloyd was 14 & transferred to Fremantle Boys' School, Lorraine was at Uni/Teachers' College. In 1958 he took the position of Warden at St Christopher's Hostel at Northam until he died in 1963. Don was a very community minded person who played important community roles wherever he lived.¹

She was a most capable young woman - skilled in needlecraft, cooking, home making and also in a leadership role in her community. At 24 she was the youngest CWA secretary in the district. When she lived in Jardee she was a mentor to many young mothers. After Don died she stayed as matron at St Christophers and the many death notices & cards received by the family were testimony to the work that she had done there over the years.¹
