After Wally died she lived for a time firstly with Bruce & Kath then with Ruth & Don. From there she had a position as Cottage Mother at Mogumber Aboriginal Mission on the Bindoon Moora Road. Her next position was Cottage Mother at Swan Homes under the directorship of Roy Peterkin. When the holiday home for the children at Coogee was threatened with a take over by some homeless group after the war Ellen took 30 children from Swan to live permanently at Coogee. Swan Homes provided for them but were not generous with staff - one cook & one laundress! When she began to lose her sight Don & Ruth sold up in Jardee and took over running the Home.2

This was not a happy move & they retuned to Manjimup.4
