George W. and Mary Carpenter

8. George W. CARPENTER
was born in 1844 in Orwell, Oswego Co., NY. He served in in 1864/65 with the 157th
Infantry, Company I, New York State Volunteers, during the
American Civil War. He fought in a number of battles in Maryland, Pennsylvania and
South Carolina. He died in Chittenango, Madison County, New York
and is buried in the Fyler cemetery.

Geo. W. has just received an old photo with which he is pleased. It is a picture
of Martello Tower, Tybee Island, SC, the first fortification in the U.S. The photo
was taken in 1864 and was presented to Mr. Carpenter by Capt. L. F. Briggs. Mr.
C. was in Company I, 157th Regiment, Briggs was his Captain. At the time the photo
was taken the Regiment was in camp in the locality of the Island. It is at the
entrance of the Savannah River and is now a great summer resort. The fortress
was built of oyster shells and cement.

Mary Elizabeth
SHAVER was born on Oct 8 1847 in Utica NY. She died on May 9 1919 in Chittenango,
Madison Co., NY.

Elmer R. CARPENTER died on May 3 1929. Possibly died in railway accident.

house on Polytechnic St and will move his family here from Auburn.
April 24, 1914 - E. R. Carpenters moving from Presbyterian parsonage where they
have been living temporarily, to the house on Arch St bought from L. V. Evans
Jr.
