GUS BUTLER 1874-1956 Gus Butler, 81, a well known citizen of Johnson County, died Wednesday night, Januray 18 1956,at his home at River, Ky., following an illness of several months. A member of one of Johnson County's pioneer families he was born October 25 1874, the son of George and Jane Preston Butler. He was a retired farmer and a member of the United Baptist Church since his youth. He is survived by his wife Lydia Spears Butler, four sons, George Butler, Detroit, Mich.; Robert Butler, and Clyde M. Butler, Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Estil Butler, Johnstown, Pennsyvania; and two daughters, Eva Lee Butler, River; and Mrs. Robert Carney, Washington, D.C. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ella Butler, city; and Mrs. Lula Meade, Ashland. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the River United Baptist Church with C.C. Sparks, Grover Fannin and Paul Turner as officiating ministers. Music was by the Tom's Creek Quartet. Burial was made in the family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Tom, Virgil, and Lon Butler; Bob McKenzie; Hannibal Meade; Crate Rice; Herschel, Russell, Raymond, and Broadus Spears.
