Jenkins Accident
Francis Burchett
One of Two to
Lose Life Saturday
Francis Burchett, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Burchett of
Jenkins, formerly of Van Lear, suffered fatal injuries in an
automobile accident near Jenkins Saturday night as he and four
other youths were returning from a basketball game between Jenkins
and Virgie, at Virgie.
Burchett died in a Jenkins hospital three hours after the
accident, which proved fatal also to Joe Bevins, 17, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Warren Bevins of Jenkins. Bevins was killed instantly.
The driver of the car, Billy Colyer, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.F.
Salyer, of Jenkins, suffered internal injuries and is in a serious
condition. A manslaughter warrant has been issued against him,
according to information from Jenkins. Others injured were Don
Whitaker, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Whitaker, a skull fracture,
condition critical, and George Reich, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Michitti Reich, of Jenkins, internal injuries.
According to reports from Jenkins the youths attended the game and
were returning to Pikeville when the driver lost control of the
vehicle on Shelby Mountain, near the Pike-Letcher County border,
and plunged down a 100 foot embankment.
Double funeral services were held for Burchett and Bevins at
Jenkins Tuesday morning and the body of Burchett was returned to
Johnson County for interment
at Stambaugh, Reverend James of Jenkins officiating.
The youth’s survivors include his parents, two brothers, Willard
and Edwin, both of Covington; four sisters, Mrs. Donald Nash of
Waukegan, Ill., Jimmie Anne, Dona Sue and Nancy Lou, all at home.
Young Burchett was a nephew of Mrs. Powell Williams and C. H.
Stambaugh, both of Paintsville.
