JACOB STAPLETON

Jacob Walter Stapleton, 66, real estate dealer of this city, died
suddenly of a heart attack at 4:00 p.m. July 29, 1954.

Known affectionately as Jake to hundreds of people throughout the Big
Sandy Valley.  He had made his home in Paintsville for the past 15
years.

Mr. Stapleton was born in Johnson County, a son of the late G. B.
(Mack) and Emma Ward Stapleton.  He attended the public schools and
the Sandy Valley Seminary of Paintsville, Lebanon University, Lebanon,
Ohio, later going to Jefferson, Georgia for pre-law and to the College
of Law at the University of Louisville.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Bar Association ,and
the Elks Lodge of Paintsville.

Jake was a natural born salesman and preferred this career to the
regular practice of law.  He was young at heart, had a keen sense of
humor, and an optimistic outlook on life.  He met every man, woman,
and child with a friendly greeting at all times.

Mr. Stapleton was preceded in death in 1948 by only brother, Beecher
Stapleton, who was a promoter of civil affairs and good will among the
people of his native Eastern Kentucky.

The survivors of Jake are three sons and two daughters, Jack Ward,
Jake Walter II, both of Lexington, Ky., Johnny Mack in service, now
stationed in England, Mrs. Robert Jones, Lexington, Ky., and Mrs. R.
A. Hall, Huntington, W. Va., also three sisters, Mrs. J M. Finlayson,
Mrs. Ray Stafford, and Mrs. C. O. Wheeler, all of Paintsville.

The last rites were given in the First Methodist Church at Oil
Springs, the church in which his father and mother had participated in
founding, and burial was made in the family cemetery there.

His body lay in state here at the home of his nephew, Charles O.
Wheeler, Jr., where the final respects paid him were indicative of the
love held for him by the people of Paintsville and this vicinity.

Burial was under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home.
