FREDERICK F. SMITH Sr. 1869-1957 AGED RESIDENT DIES WEDNESDAY Frederick Smith, Sr. Retired Businessman Buried Here June 1 Frederick F. Smith, Sr., 87, died May 29 at his home here after an illness of several weeks. A native of Spencer, W. Va., Mr. Smith spent his early years as a merchant in Spencer and Ravenswood, W. Va., with his father, the late Addison A. Smith. His later years were spent in Parkersburg. He was born Sept. 3, 1869. During his residence in Ravenswood, he was superintendent of the Sunday School of the Methodist Church, and was active in religious, civic, and social affairs. In Parkersburg, he was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church. His enjoyment and faithfulness in attending church set an example for his many friends and his children. Mr. Smith became a 50-year Mason in 1953 at a special ceremony in Ravenswood. he was also a member of the Old Guard, a social club for retired businessmen in Parkersburg. Mr. Smith was married in 1911 to the former Miss Edna Stafford of Paintsville. To this union were born three children, the Rev. Frederick F. Smith, Jr., Knoxville, Tennessee; Miss Martha Mary Smith, Cincinnati, O., and Stafford Smith, Atlanta, Ga. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ella T. Crew, Warrenton, North Carolina, and Miss Virginia Smith, Ravenswood. Funeral services were held at the Mayo Methodist Church, at 2:00 p.m. June 1, with the Rev. Charles Dearing officiating, assisted by Rev. William F. Pettus of the First Methodist Church. Pallbearers were Melvin Hefner, Clarence Melvin, John L. Spears, M.D. Bailey, C.C. Williams, and Glen Sturgell. Burial was made in the Stafford family cemetery, Stafford Addition, with special graveside services by the Paintsville Lodge, No. 381, F. & A.M.
