ELIZA LAVENDER 1823-1913 Mrs. Eliza Lavender, more commonly known as "Aunt Liza", was born in Amhurst county, Va., Sept.12 1823. She was a daughter of John and Elizabeth Hager, one of a family of twelve children. In 1832 her father moved with his entire family into Kentucky, settling upon the Big Sandy river, in what was then known as Floyd County. About the year 1840 the deceased was married to Edward Lavender. She was the mother of four children, two sons and two daughters; one son named James dying in infancy, and one daughter, Kittie, who married Geo W. Preston, died a few years ago after she became a mother. The other son, John T. Lavender, survives to mourn the loss of his aged and devoted mother. The other daughter, Marietta, now Mrs. F.M. Stafford, survives the deceased. The deceased, since her home was burned down in Paintsville a few years ago has alternately made her home with her son, John T. Lavender, and her daughter, Mrs. F.M. Stafford. At the laters home is where the deceased's last sickness and death occurred. The deceased was converted to the region of Christ about 13 years ago under the pastorate of Rev. John Martin, at which time she united with the M. E. Church South. Her conversion was clear, distinct and beautiful and from the hour of her conversion to the time of her death, Aug.01 1913, she never lost the interity of her faith; and many times when all alone she would shout and sing the praises of God. The last several months of her life were spent at the home of her daughter, where she had every intention and in the hour of death was surrounded by loving friends and relatives. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. O.J. Carder, assisted by Rev. Setzer, took place at the home of her daughter in the presence of a large assemblage of friends and relatives. Interment was made in the family burying ground just back of the Stafford House. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. Paintsville Herald Thursday Aug.21 1913
