PAINTSVILLE - Jane Walker Clay Bailey, gifted teacher, died April 3,
2008. Few will walk this life with as much passion-filled grace as
Jane Clay Bailey. To all, she was a spirited woman. To her family she
was a wife, a mother and a grandmother. She was a teacher, a tutor
and a mentor to generations of young people. Whether teaching
literature, history, or the kids on Fifth Street how to water-ski,
she helped mold the minds and hearts of many. She was proud of her
mountain heritage. Understanding that education didn't banish
ignorance, she was a staunch defender of the eastern Kentucky way of
life. She touched countless lives with her wisdom, her determination,
and her great curiosity. Jane Bailey had a powerful voice and she had
a lot to say. Today that special voice is quiet. Her long-standing
column in the Paintsville Herald, As I Was Saying, is sadly at a loss
for her words. But words are like the seeds of a fertile garden -
once planted they continue to bloom and resonate within those who
carry them. She is survived by the love of her life, William Garland
Bailey, who shared her journey every day for sixty-two years. They
married in 1945 and raised their son, the now retired, Air Force
General Clay Bailey and their daughter, Nancye Thompson. Together
they enjoyed three granddaughters Sarah Thompson Fitzgerald, Jane
Collins Thompson and Carolyn Clay Bailey Larson. In April of 2006,
she embraced her first great-grandchild, Clay Brian Larson. Jane Clay
Bailey was a leader and a nurturer, a believer and a seeker and most
certainly a force to be reckoned with. Throughout her rich life, even
unto the end, she "did it her way." She will be missed; her memory
honored.
