 MARTHA AUXIER
1866-1953

Mrs. Martha Stafford Auxier, 86, wife of the late James W.
Auxier, president of the Paintsville Wholesale Grocery Company
and the First National Bank, passed away at her home on Euclid Ave.,
Friday after several weeks of Illness.

She was born May 9, 1866 at the old family home place on Stafford
Addition of Paintsville, the daughter of William and Martha Hagar
Stafford. She was the last surviving member of a family of seven.

On October 2, 1889, she was married to James W. Auxier of
Floyd Co, who preceded he in death about 14 years ago.

At an early age, Mrs. Auxier's family moved to a farm where the
town of West Van Lear is now located, and during her girlhood
she became a member of the Methodist Church, an affiliation in
which she continued an active interest during the rest of her
life. True to the traditions of her pioneer ancestors many of
whom were the first settlers in the Big Sandy, the Auxier home
was always kept "open house" to the many friends and relatives.
Granny Duck"as she was affectionately known, will be missed not
only by the children but by the host of friends who
stopped by for a friendly chat or a word of advice.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. E.E. Archer, Mrs. C.M. Hagar,
Mrs. Henry LaViers and Mrs John Newman, all of Paintsville,
nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at the Mayo Memorial Church Sunday at
3:00 p.m. by the Revs. J.I. Meyer and W.F. Pettus

Internment was in the Mayo Cemetery under the direction of the
Jones Funeral Home.
