JAMES W. ARCHER
1911-1966
Dr. James W. Archer, 54, prominent physician and well known
Eastern Kentuckian, died suddenly Tuesday after becoming ill while
on duty at the Paintsville Hospital here.
Dr. Archer had gone home and was under treatment when he was
fatally stricken by an apparent coronary attack.
He was the son of Fannie Auxier Archer and the late Dr. Ernest E.
Archer, one of the founders of the Paintsville Hospital.
A graduate of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia,
he received his academic degree at the University of Kentucky and
his medical degree at the University of Louisville. After
interning in Oklahoma City, he returned to Paintsville and began
his practice here. He was a member of Mayo Memorial Methodist
Church, an advisor to the State Selective Service Board, an
officer in the General Practitioners Association and a member of
Paintsville’s Citizens Advisory Committee.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Stapleton Archer, a daughter,
Mrs. C.W. Jenkins of Fairborn, Ohio and a son Jerry Archer, with
the Kentucky State Police in Frankfort. Also surviving are his
brother, Dr. George P. Archer, mayor of Prestonsburg, and three
sisters; Mrs. T. L. Roberts of Vero Beach Florida, Mrs. J. H.
Rapier of Paintsville, and Mrs. Robert F. Conley of Louisville.
Funeral services are to be held Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.,
at May Memorial Church with Rev. Leslie M. Rogers officiating.
The body will lie in state at the church prior to services. Burial
will follow in Richmond cemetery.
The Jones Preston funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
