Leonard Cole4 was born on 8 October 1802 in New York, United States of America.4 Between 1850 and 1860 he was a Farmer in Michigan, United States of America.4,881 He died on 24 May 1863 in Michigan, United States of America.4 The book "Ingham County Pioneer Families" by George I. Hammell has information on Leonard Cole. Leonard Cole, son of David Cole, with his brother Cornelius (Cornelius C. Cole) came to Locke in 1839. Both settled the Section 14, Cornelius on the southwest corner of what is now Hoxie and Morrice Roads, and Leonard on the northeast corner of Corey and Bell Oak Roads.

From the History of Ingham and Eaton Counties, Michigan
By Samuel W. Durant
Published 1880 by D.W. Ensign & Co., Philadelphia
"Leonard COLE arrived in the same year, having purchased and settled upon land on section 14 which was entirely unimproved. He began the clearing of this land, and eventually rendered it very productive. Neighbors were neither numerous nor easily reached at this early day, and the settlers were obliged to depend upon their own exertions. Only on occasions of raisings did the community appear in full force to offer assistance, more frequently lured by the social pleasures of the occasion and the good cheer which inevitably accompanied such a gathering. Mr. COLE occupied the farm until his death, when his sons, the present occupants, inherited the land. His widow survived until the year 1878."

His age at enlistment coincides with an 1834 birth date.

From the following web site I obtained details about Charles Coll - Livingston County Michigan WWI Honor Roll (http://www.livgenmi.com/ww1veteranorganizations.htm) -

"Charles was a founding member of the American Legion Post in Fowlerville. Regarding the history of the post - Orson A. Rose Post No. 215, Fowlerville, Michigan, was established almost entirely thru the efforts of Charles Coll, a charter member and the first adjutant of the post. Mr. Coll was the first man to be inspired with the thought that a post could be organized in our small village. He laid his plans before two of the present charter members and they readily agreed to help him. At once information was written for and received.
In order to obtain a charter, fifteen members were necessary. This was accomplished in one week. It was agreed the first meeting would be held on Tuesday night, 11 November 1919. At that meeting each charter member became a committee of one to register new members. So successful has been the work in our small community that by the end of 1919 we had a membership of 37.

At the first meeting, the name of the post was declared, the ORSON A. ROSE POST NO. 215, in memory of an old friend, a member of the 126th Infantry, 32nd Division, who was killed over there. The men elected temporary officers from their midst: Post Commander, Major I. Bravener; First Vice-Commander, Ray Sherwood; Second Vice-Commander, Lloyd E. Copeland; Post Adjutant, Chas. H. Coll; Post Finance Officer, Orla Don Risdon; Post Historian, Percy A. Dunn; Post Chaplain, Flex B. Smith.

These men with the following were the charter members of the post: Deo M. Blackmer, Lester F. Huff, William Ireland, Chas. Jackson, Andrew Linquist, J. D. Lockwood, Oscar Dan Rose, B. Tobin.

The foundation for the American Legion found birth and growth in Fowlerville very successful, and long may it continue."
