__________

From Steve Novak - his recollections of Marguerite:

She died June 23, 1990 in Fowlerville. She never married. Marguerite did have some physical problems - she was very slight and frail and I believed had some neck/nerve type problems. I just know that she was fairly frail as I recall. She did have a male companion named Peter Iskra. Pete had a jewellry store in Fowlerville - lived in the back of the store. He also had a boat and he and Marguerite would often call us up on a Sunday - they were down on the Detroit River and we would meet them for a meal and a ride on the boat. Pete was a character. He had a very unique laugh and was also a notoriously cheap tipper! When I say cheap - I mean he would leave a quarter (1961-1970) after 5,6 or 7 people had dined.

I do recall both Morgan and Ada being ill. When Morgan was dying, my Mom would go over and take care of him. I believe it was something to do with his kidneys - not quite sure. I believe that was the first time I had seen anyone dead and I remember going to the funeral home down the street (and around the corner) and seeing "Grandpa" Morgan laid out.

After both had passed, Marguerite lived out the remainder of her life in the house (the address was 325 E. Grand River in Fowlerville). I have many memories of holidays there when we would join with Maurine (Vaughn) Powell and her family and Marguerite. At Christmas time we would drive over before Christmas to deliver the loaves of brown bread that Marguerite would bake for most of Fowlerville. (Honestly, I never liked the bread! Marguerite wasn't much of a cook - never measured things very accurately. We used to have a joke - Once she asked how the dinner rolls tasted. Someone (not wanting to hurt her feelings) replied, "Tasty, very tasty." That became our standard response in the family whenever something didn't taste very well!!! At any rate, Marguerite was a sweet lady - and she loved her Whiskey Sours (she always seemed to have a jar of them in the refrigerator).

I can still hear her voice in my head - after someone would have said something interesting, startling, or humorous - she would reply - "Oh for heaven's sake!"

There were two interesting places in her house - the upstairs and the cellar. The years have dimmed my memory somewhat of both places. The cellar was off the kitchen and I remember it being cold, dark, damp and musty smelling and seemingly lit with a single bare light bulb. I'm not sure what was kept down there except for fruits and vegetables, etc. that might have been canned. The main floor of the house was nicely furnished - there was the kitchen, dining room, living room, parlor, bedroom and bathroom. There was also a swing at one time on the front porch. I called the room - the parlor - it was off the living room and it could have had Marguerite's bed in there when Ada and Morgan were still alive. I do know that is where Morgan's sick bed was located. (I think he and Ada may have slept apart - he had a room upstairs according to my Aunt Noreen.) At any rate, the parlor was where all the kids would congregate - there were games to play (I think one was called "Cootie" - a build a bug game, and when we were older - "Po-Ke-No" and also coloring books. Marguerite kept those coloring books for many years beyond our youth - it was fun to go back and see the pictures we had colored when we were young. As for upstairs, I remember the stairs beyond a door in the living room that went up to the upper level. I'm not sure if it was just an upper floor or a "furnished" attic - I guess an upper floor. I do remember it was very sparsely furnished and after Ada and Morgan died, it seemed to become a storage area for belongings of various family members. When I joined the military in 1970 some of my belongings went in a foot locker at Marguerite's house.
